I am thrilled to be here at the Gulch! I am a mother of three beautiful sons, one still living at home and in high school. I am an artist and creative by nature. I have encouraged all my boys to read Atlas Shrugged. I read it several years ago and have just picked it up to read again. I feel it’s an honor to be among freedom seekers and like-minded thinkers.

How old are your sons? Did you introduce it to them when they were very young, or after they got interested in philosophical/political ideas on their own?--My reason for asking is that, while I think children should be encouraged in independent thought, it would not be a good idea to have them recite and memorize passages from Ayn Rand's writing, the way some Christian Fundamentalists have their children memorize and recite Bible verses.

My boys are now 23, 22,15 with the 15 yo only one still at home. I homeschooled the oldest 2 in middle school, 12 to 14 yo, and introduced it to them them as part of reading program. We watched the movies when I came across them and compared to the book as part of lessons. I worked it into the program without so much as testing as discussing. My youngest is homeschooled 10th grade and I will be going through it with him this year. My oldest and I discuss it occasionally because as an adult he is becoming more aware of political environment now and can appreciate the similarities and ideals being pushed. I never required them to memorize the content. We read and discussed as an exercise how to have reasonable conversations on literary works compared to real life possibilities. This was a few years ago. I’ve been teaching my 15 yo the constitution and civics, economics on the side as a supplement to the online schooling program. This year we will discuss Rand and Orwell in the same manner as with previously with his brothers.
