Expanding suffrage to more ignorant people is the opposite of what should be done.
Restrict voting based on knowledge of the original intent of the constitution and bill of rights.
Everyone should earn the right to vote, not be handed it on a silver platter at any set age.
Some states require people applying for a carry permit to show they are proficient with a firearm.
In my opinion, the privilege of voting should require the prospective voter to be proficient in thinking and to prove knowledge of economics, history, current events, and proficiency in ENGLISH.
That will eliminate at least 70% of current voters, imo.
Those who are proficient then can retain their voting privileges by helping to tutor others who are not proficient.
If you want a voice in government you should prove you understand enough to make good choices.
Few 16 year olds are experienced and mature enough to make such serious decisions.

For me its skin in the game. Few if any sixteen years old pay rent or own a car. Some may have part time or summer jobs but are not self supporting. Even at 21 most young adults don't have a clue about history and consequences of their votes. As with the opening of the borders and flooding of illegals (who also have no skin in the game) this is nothing more than an effort to create a one party government.

I completely agree with your position.

In fact I would support making it a requirement for citizenship, that the person have to be a Veteran and furthermore only allow Veterans to vote. Kind of like how things were run in the book Starship Troopers.

Some of us were not allowed to serve in the Armed Forces for reasons of health. Does this mean I shouldn't be allowed to vote?

Within the book that I mentioned there was a global war in progress and it mainly addressed the war itself. As the citizenship requirement was only mentioned in passing things were not explored deeply in relation to how their government was run. With that said and to answer your question I firmly believe that some form of Public service should be a requirement to earn citizenship and therefore voting rights. I do not support everyone voting and would certainly not support non-citizen or the homeless voting as they have no skin in the game, and to take it further anyone on Governmental assistance has no skin in the game.

As to you personally I do not know you nor do I know your situation but I would suggest that if you don't have skin in the game then you shouldn't be allowed to vote.

You have to understand that I am suggesting what I believe would be an ideal solution not something that I believe could ever actually come to be.

I was just playing Devil's Advocate, but now that you mention it ( "some form of Public service should be a requirement to earn citizenship" ) I must point out that JFK's remark is backwards. The government's purpose is to serve the people. The people have NO obligation to serve the government!

I am in favor of requiring the ability to understand the English language, and a basic knowledge of the Constitution in order to vote. And of course only citizens must be given the franchise, People who are born in the USA of parents who are citizens should of course be citizens by birth ( but not necessarily have the right to vote ).

As for myself, I was born in the USA of parents who were born here as well. Although it should not make any difference, I spent twenty years of my life as a teacher, so I have made a ( voluntary ) contribution to the community. At present I can vote, but NOT for the President, since I reside in the US Virgin Islands.

Your statement of, "The people have NO obligation to serve the government!" is ABSOLUTELY correct. Yet, here I am advocating for service to the government. I take this position because it would enforce the whole Skin in the Game position not because the government is deserving of service but because the people that the government represent are deserving if we are to be in a position to imposed our will on them.

prof6, if you don't mind answering, what is your opinion on living in the USVI? I am trying to decide on a place to live outside the states and the Caribbean is high on my list.

As I stated elsewhere in this topic, I agree with some form of service to earn voting franchise, and teaching others how to qualify for the privilege of voting is one way I suggest. I think that military service is not necessarily a good prerequisite for voting franchise however.

Everything the Democrats do has become about manipulation and the extension of their own power. Yes, this is a patently absurd notion. But it shouldn't surprise anyone.

Should we reject it for what it is? Absolutely.

Me dino recalling what I was like at age 16. Yikes! What a feelings-driven getting his kicks goofball! Me now an old dino was driving an old car my Dad let me use (how was I to buy one?) from which I'd occasionally toss a cherry bomb out the door window after lighting it with the cigarette lighter or an actual cigarette bought in packs from a cigarette machine they had back in those days. During summers I'd be daredevil slalom skiing around cypress stumps with a friend of my same age who for goofing around ran over me after I took a spill one time. Hey, dudes and dudettes, there's nothing more memorable than pushing yourself off the side of a boat with a lifebelt on and flipping over slightly beneath the surface to see an outboard prop whizz by your face. Another time my ski skimmed off the top of a submerged cypress stump and sent me flying up, up, up seven feet high into the air. Man, what a rush! Yahoo!
Hey, now lemme into that voting booth. Maybe I'll write-in Mickey Mouse for president. Maybe Al Capone! Hey, even Adolf Hitler! Ha! Ha! Ha! What will they say when they see that? Cool, man!

Generally kids of that age don't know enough about life to make an informed decision on such matters. Caveat, anyone who volunteers for military service has every right to vote and drink alcohol.

Most "kids" of 30 don't know enough about life to make an informed decision on anything.
Any 18 year old who volunteers for military service is no more informed that any other 18 year old.
Maybe after they complete 4 years of service they will have more life experience but not necessarily be more informed about what government actions are constitutional, for example.

If you choose to suspend your constitutional rights by putting your life on the line, by being trusted with millions of dollars worth of equipment, and/or being trained to take or save lives you damn will deserve every bit of entitlement the constitution provides, 17 not. That choice, short of being made an option by a court, shows a level of maturity that demands acknowledgement. Even being dumb as a box of rocks, being in the service makes all the difference in the world when adding your voice to the direction of the country.
I'm a veteran and I served, drank, and fought with a lot of young people worth the risk. My two bits, nothing more..

Choosing someone who can control your life is a very serious devoir. First have a contract (constitution) that ensures their liability for their decisions and limits their function to controlling the government not the people. Then don't let them determine who can vote. One reason for not letting anyone vote who didn't own property was that if you didn't have anything to lose because of your choice you might choose badly.
Who and how do you determine who will have positions of authority? I don't have an answer but it is clear the current method hasn't worked.

Actually, the current method has worked up until now. This past election was an abortion. And, now that "they" know how to do it and are in power to make more "laws" (H1) to continue the stealing, a civil war is looming on the horizon.

Even older voters far too many vote for reasons not for the good of the country but with emotions. Have several relatives and friends of their who voted for (shaking) HRC because she claims to be female : /

We allow welfare recipients to vote!!! You should forfeit your right to vote just as soon as you get on the public dole. We have become a banana republic with voting rules that even Jimmy Carter would not allow if he was overseeing the voting in some backwater country.

If allowing 18-year-olds to vote required a Constitutional Amendment (#26), how is this constitutional? Ans: IT ISN'T!!! But then, neither is it constitutional to allow DC to become a State, or to "Federalize" elections. The 23rd Amendment (ratified in 1961) refers to DC as "The District constituting the seat of the Government of the United States," and already grants DC representation in the Electoral College (for the purpose of electing the President and Vice President), but again, refers to DC as "if it were a State" (implying that it is NOT a State). This (23rd Amendment) would have to be revised for DC to become a State, and that requires another Amendment, which requires 3/4 of the States to ratify to become effective. Also, to "Federalize" elections, we would have to revise Article II, Section 1 of the Constitution itself, which states that each State Legislature shall appoint Electors; this is NOT under the authority of the Federal Government!!! AGAIN, changing this would require another Amendment, which requires 3/4 of the States to ratify!!! If the Democrat Party makes these changes at the federal level, they are UNCONSTITUTIONAL and INVALID!!! If the Supreme Court had any "balls" they would strike it down after "Plugs" signs it! But, we seem to have a "See no Evil, Hear no Evil" Supreme Court. These rogue Communist democrats need to be recognized as the Trojan-Horse TRAITORS that they are!!! THEY are the Enemy of the People and of the Republic!!!

Read the Chinese Constitution and you will see the commies over there don't abide by it, either. It's basically just another piece of paper filed away somewhere deep in the bureaucracy dragged out and dusted off when some faction in the State needs a cudgel to increase its power over some other faction or the people in general.

Even when I was a child, I remember thinking that you should have to pay taxes to have the right to vote. Other wise it would be like two wolves and a chicken voting on who is for lunch. Today many people in their late 20 and 30 are first starting to realize that things may be more complex than they seem. The ignorance of youth, or ignorance in general will always see the benefits of socialism in spite of the track record of devastation.

It's not just giving the right to vote to teenagers but also JB soon to be KH administration ( according to some news reports) they will be giving illegal aliens and criminals the right to vote. (Criminals will still be able to get guns as opposed to law abiding citizens). They are pulling out all the stops to keep themselves in power.

So, if the kids are set free to vote, then parents should be set free to kick them out to work! 16 year old brains are not developed, they hate the world, and are easily manipulated. They have no critical thinking skills yet. This is just buying votes and once used up, they turn their backs on them, thier education or any demands they make. Sheep being led to slaughter. Of course, teachers are the problem, they have no critical thinking skills eithers, with an average IQ of 110 and falling. These kids shold not be voting, they should have "Brave New Wrold," :Anthem," and "1984" as required reading.
