Wow! FFA...well said. Now some of us who are 'white' are actually mixed breeds. My father was a half-breed American Indian...is that white? My mother was half-breed Ashkenasi...what is that? I think racist people stink. I am not ashamed to be white and educated. I've worked and supported myself since I was 18 years old and even added in a child I supported after I kicked 'whatshisname' to the curb!

BTW...I live in an 8000 square foot home with 7 bedrooms and 8-1/2 bathrooms. I have a 55,000 gallon in ground swimming pool and this home sits on 6-1/2 city lots (an entire block minus 1-1/2 lots where a nice 4 br home sits. I did this and I didn't finish my college education paid for by me.

If these 'do nothings' think they are aristocracy let me fill you in. My family came to this country in the 1600's. My first American ancestor was born in this country in 1619. When did Pelosi's folks get off the boat? My second cousin was President of the U.S. and my female 1st cousin was the first lady Governor of Texas. She was a Democrat and we agreed on nothing. My great grandfather was a Civil War surgeon. I was Administrative Assistant to a brilliant executive who helped create the largest Insurance Group in America. I became a Federal Lobbyist. I write books. Loser right? Skin color doesn't matter.

It's the Atlantic. They have been communist since the 1950's.
"Every piece of the pie picked up by the 0.1 percent, in relative terms, had to come from the people below."
Yes, same old bull$%^t lie that ignores improvements in productivity and ignores inventions that make the pie bigger. GD socialist biased scumbag.
The author appears to be feeling guilty for being a looting asshat white person and it's all the fault of other white people that's making him feel bad.
So the rest of us white people have to give it up (again) for colored people who have never produced jack-$%^t .
Wait, that's not enough. White MEN are the essence of the problem. Lets just get rid of them. That will make the pie smaller in a hurry.

btw, if you put the link somewhere other than the title, people might be able to get there without having to retype the entire link.

Per the article there's a lack of colored people in the 'aristocracy' "—even though those groups together account for 35 percent of the total population."
That's what happens when the ruling parties open the borders and let 80 million illegals stay. The wealthy aristocracy isn't coming here illegally. It's almost entirely poor people who have no skills to move up. That's three-fourths of the 35% the author is so concerned about. But I guarantee the author wants those borders wide open.
The entire "article" is a tirade of complaining without a single clue of what the problem is
The solution must be more government. "Yes, the kind of change that really matters is going to require action from the federal government. "

The kind of change that really matters requires the death of the federal government and revolution by the American People. There is no peaceful means.

    Thanks for posting this article.

Much of what it says I think is a consequence of the recent trend of equity returning more and labor returning less than in previous decades. My impression is the post WWII period of equality is the anomaly, and higher wealth disparity a reversion to the mean.

I think of modern inequality as different from agricultural times because wealth is not limited by arable land or other resources.

On the points from the article:
9.9% - Whether it’s 9.9%, 1% or whatever, you could do that to any data set, e.g. running speed in the 50 yard dash. Doing it by wealth just sets up resentment. It’s almost like the beginning of an allegory about pure democracy being two wolves and lamb voting on what’s for dinner.

Mobility - I was unclear on why the author had to start from zero working hard in fast food while his grandfather was wealthy. Was most of that money lost in the Teapot Dome scandal? In any case, I question the idea we don’t have mobility. Sure if your parents bequeath you wealth, you have that wealth, but how often does that wealth disappear by the following generation? How often to people start from nothing and build wealth?

Assortative Mating - This is an ancient thing. I wonder if it’s even less true because women’s rights are more respected allowing them to earn their own money. You still get sorting when you get a nerdy attorney girl and electronics geek hooking up and building decent wealth. :) In earlier times, the girl would have married a male lawyer, and the geek would have been less likely to mate.
That’s different from the old story of adults keeping kids from marrying.

Education Privilege - This is the idea that an elite education is more about meeting other upper class people and marking you as upper class more than actually learning more than at a non-elite school. This doesn’t ring true to me, but I didn’t go to an elite college; I’m not really sure.

Invisible Hand of Taxes - The author is right, IMHO, that many people, including the upper middle class are good at getting gov’t grants and benefits. I think that’s an emergent property of a large gov’t. I question if it can be tweaked so the money goes to the needy.

Gilded Zip Code - Part of geographic stratification is just a part of the broader trend of stratification. I think he’s right, though, about zoning regulation driving up prices. NIMBY is a strong political force.

Resentment Politics - I hope I’m wrong, but I think we haven’t heard the last of it. Parts of this article, esp dividing people by frequency distribution (“the 9.9%”), seem to start from a point of resentment. When I read the parts about President Trump, I think he just wasn’t able to sell resentment to a broad enough audience. I suspect someone will come along and sell it better using elements of Trump’s antics and elements of this article.
