What drives the magnetic field, as it shifts, to simply go away? The earth has an iron core. What makes its magnetism disappear?

The compass rose will always be important, since it shows the variations between true and magnetic headings. True is referenced to the physical poles; magnetic to the mag field
If you want an interesting study, look up "grid navigation," used near the poles due to the rapid changes in magnetic headings. When we flew with grid navigation from McMurdo Station, Antarctica, to the geographic South Pole our compass, having been realigned to the grid, read very close to "north."

So rather than shifting with the magnetic field, the Van Allen Belts would just go away? I find this hard to believe.

This is quite interesting, and maybe it's just the changing of the coherence level of the earths magnetic core, and how it's rotating...

Very very interesting when I put it into perspective with what I am learning to understand about magnetism...

No Magnetic field= No Van Allen Belts= No shield against cosmic radiation=DNA cooks=No viable reporduction. Not to mention huge increase in violent storms and rain due to increased cloud nucleation. Remember Noahs Ark? Maybe 12,000 years ago or so? Could be a connection?

I think Diamond referenced that when he talks about the out of sequence update, instead of every 5 years (or was it 10), they did it halfway through because of the amount of error being introduced. The new maps are then used to update the magnetic compass offsets. I would think satellite data could almost do real time updates if needed, and stuff like GPS does not need it, even a gyro compass of sufficient quality would not need it.

Most air fields have a "compose rose" that is used to measure the deviation of a plane's magnetic compass readings from those shown on navigational maps. The plane is shifted around on the rose and the deviations recorded on a correction card for the navigator's use. I don't know if is still used much now in view of modern nav systems, but I'd to ask any currently active aviators out there if this has required more frequent updates to correction cards or if the compass rose become another relic of aviation history?

Other than more frequent updates to my GPS and compass card in my airplane, how is this important? Grid navigation near the equator? I don't think so, and even if so, so what?

Let us hope that it is just an excursion this time and they will get close and then move back to whence they came...we can survive that but if the magnetic poles continue then all hell breaks loose.

We will at some point cross the galactic magnetic sheet which is full of dust and debris which will cause our sun to eject all that debris in one Big Sneeze! That is what we are calling: a Micro Nova.

Sadly, there is an upside although it won't mean much for a long time after. All the earths resources will be replenished and possibly new, never known resources will be deposited as well.

PS...the magnetosphere is not weakening any more or less that it does every 12K years. His statement is correct if we only look at the last 12K years which defines our current civilization.
What happened 12K years ago? our ancestors wrote about it. It was the biblical flood! Given that paradigm they lived in and their bicameral state of brain, thoughts, beliefs, culture and behaviors; one can now understand why they credited the event to an angry god...and...their behavior as described as the "end days of Noah" was likely the results of a lack of a conscious mind and the effects of extreme cosmic radiation on the brain and bodies of our ancestors.

Exactly, and it reaches a point where they are not cold enough to make sea ice, and then things will stagnate until the next warming cycle begins. The suns coordination with the magnetic belt is never really mentioned but I see a direct connection, and that there is a merge of what they call the "Plasma Universe" with the "Electric Universe".

(And the oceans will have higher salinity.)

Yes, the Ice will lock up fresh water and some salt water depending on temperatures and Salinity, the majority is always fresh from compacting snow becoming Ice. Note that also will lower sea levels to where the megalithic site is off Iwo Jima?? Coincidence?

The other videos he produced also indicate that the more likely future is an ice age (hundreds of years long) and a drop in sea levels of 300 feet during the ice age. I assume this is due to greater amounts of ice existing on land.
