Private Message- 1326Posted by $ jlc 10 years, 9 months ago to [Ask the Gulch] Is there a way we can stop the motor in California? Gas prices are going up in California, for no good reason, they're raising minimum wage to $15.00, they're controlling our health insurance/medical... Things need to change and quickly.Right now, I live in a big red Barn on an acre of land (with sheep, goat, chickens...) with 'badlands' on two sides of me for miles. I am <15 min from work, on surface streets. So, my life in SoCal is not typical. And I would not think it were better to feed the Mexican Bull my money than the American Ass, insofar as governments are concerned.
I have looked into the idea of commuting from BajaCal to CA and if I am in the US >30 days per year I come under the ACA again. What is more, my management style is 'management by wandering around'...which I would find difficult to do from a few hundred miles away. (I will say that your proponency of Baja has made me think of this again, though.)
It is beautiful there; thank you for the video. I remember taking trips to Baja with my parents when I was younger.
So, I am still trying to get the pieces in place for what to do next...but there is no other country or state that is pulling me towards it (CA is pushing, yes...).
Jan - 1327Thank you. We should be aware that we may always be the 3% in any society...but that a society that defaulted to rules under which that 3% can function well would already have flying cars (and maybe warp drive).
Jan - 1328If we are trying to come up with a society in which everyone can live, we have to deal with the fact that our children and grandchildren may well want to be socialists. The point I have made before is that it is feasible for socialist microcosms to exist within a capitalist framework; the reverse seems to be less true.
So, of course we are free to establish a new society, but if we want an enduring system, and don't want to repeat the mistakes of our predecessors, we should take what we have learned about our species into consideration.
Jan - 1329I do not think that high-IQ/ low-IQ is the proper division. I would let people choose - free choice!
I suspect that over half the people - including most of the high-IQ folks - would freely choose to live in a socialist environment. This is something that is not taken into account when discussing personal freedoms.

I have thought of that...
So far, it is the only thing that would protect me from the ACA. But there is a snowball's chance in hell that I would get the rest of the company to move there. Texas is possible, CA Sur is not.

Things need to change and quickly.I was raised in a military family - spent a lot of time in Texas. We used to own a lot in Corpus Christi, and we went there a couple of times a year for vacations. I have fond memories of swimming and fishing there. (Of course, hurricane Carla pushed our boat through 3' of concrete where it was berthed there...)
'Seacoast' is a requirement because it connects the region to the rest of the world.
Jan - 1332I understand. I hung around in the Gulch for a while before I decided that it was worth investing in.
Jan - 1333I voted you up even though I disagree with you. I think that the 'hostile male environment' falls on the usual Bell-shaped curve: some of the complaints by women are totally spurious, most workplaces have some small covert or overt glass ceilings left, and a few are hostile to women to a notable extent.
I would rather have direct disagreement than PC talk, though, so you get a point for that.

I am not yet convinced that this will happen, but I have eliminated any cool zones from possible targets in a physical relocation.

Sigh. Yes. Maybe...
Jan, not entirely without hope - 1336Posted by $ jlc 10 years, 9 months ago to [Ask the Gulch] Is there a way we can stop the motor in California? Gas prices are going up in California, for no good reason, they're raising minimum wage to $15.00, they're controlling our health insurance/medical... Things need to change and quickly. There is a high threshold cost to moving out of California for me - both personal and professional. In addition to the personal consequences, moving means selling the office and moving at least some of the people in the company to another state. (There are several, including some key people, who are willing to move...but not all of them, and not all of the key people.)
What do I get out of this? Is there a state that is That Much Better than California that it is worth my while to move? Is there any state that can protect me and my employees from the ACA? Is there any state that can keep CPS from grabbing the children of my employees?
I keep looking at Texas, which is large, has a lot of physical resources, is not cold, and has a seacoast (all required criteria to me). West Texas (just W of Austin) is the best place I have found so far...but there are still not Enough advantages for me to go over the threshold and actually move.
Instead, what I am seeing is the "Californiazation" of the rest of the US. Increasingly, the other states are following the path that California has taken. So why move?
Jan - 1337Sure, Brett. Please PM me at your convenience.

Jan - 1340Just reading through your post, I come away with the impression that the conclusion existed before the survey was made, and that spin was introduced to diminish the validity of happiness amongst the conservatives.
Jan - 1341I believe I am acquiring a bee allergy, so I will have to be pretty careful (swelling, not shortness of breath). I admire the trust relationship, though.
The bees in my barn were aggressive at first - I could no longer tack up the horse in front of the house, for example. Over time, they have become milder towards me, though they are still aggressive towards strangers.
Guard bees.

Jan - 1344Oh yeah!
Jan - 1345Yes. This is a lot like what I would like to buy - the nuts and bolts of life.
Jan - 1346strugatsky has hit the nail on the head. Recently, I discovered that it was almost as inexpensive to order the no-gluten salmon dog kibble from Amazon as buying it at a store. I would be more than willing to tilt the 'almost' in favor of financially supporting Gulch commercial enterprise...but the product has to be at least competitive.
So: I would be willing to buy all of my food staples (not grocs or prob not meat), clothes, cleaning products, honey, computers, etc from Gulchers. It is the 'how to do this' that provides, or does not, the interface between my willingness to buy and the reality of doing so.

I need to keep a couple of handfuls of this in my pocket for a very effective diet - do not like fish! - 1347Like Wm, I have a hive in my house; unlike him, I have not done anything about it yet. I live in a barn, and the very tiptop apex overhang acquired a hive several years ago. I could theoretically access the hive by cutting through from the backside, from inside the attic - which I intend to do. Someday. By and by.
The honey from Wm's bees was great. The aspect of a 4 or 5 to 1 ratio of effort in making wax vs making honey is a huge argument in favor of the flow hive.
It is wonderful that other people are interested in bees. Their genetics is also fascinating: drones do not exist genetically - they are just bio-envelopes in which one queen sends genetic packages to another queen (kinda like the detachable tentacles of some of the cephalopods).
Not as much to worry about in wintering over in CA. (Everything else, yes; wintering over of bees - not so much.)
Are your bees accustomed to you yet? I have seen veteran apiests handle bees without even a bee suit. That is a bit scary.
Jan - 1348Huh. Good idea. That way I could stay away from the plot elements but still get more of 'stuff that I missed'.
Good. I will put that on my todo list.
Jan - 1349I understand that I did. Still - not my cup o'tea. The only thing good about Dominique is that she has a neat name.
Jan - 1350Posted by $ jlc 10 years, 9 months ago to Yesterday, USPS Tells Me To Post My Address Where Police Can See It, Now I Know WhyIt's a little worse than that I think, term. If you are the first person to call the police in an altercation, you have a certain advantage in being considered 'the victim who called for help' and hence the innocent/injured party. So, even if you do not have an insurance involvement, you may have to call in order not to be defaulted to guilty.
And if someone calls in against you; always countercharge.
