Since I disagree with your facts on global warming (and I have posted on this many times before; do not intend to segue into that again at the moment) we are reasoning from a different set of premises. Insofar as whether ISIS constitutes more than random thugs who will soon dissipate, we will see.

I have, however, pointed you back up to 1 from 0. We disagree, but we are doing so based on disparate data sets not flaming poo flinging.

I do not agree with you in either respect: Climate change is a chimera of political agendas. Were global warming even true, it would be minor and beneficial.

ISIS is directly attacking us. It is not some slow evolution of the patterns of the Earth - these are people.trying.to.kill.me.

We agree that they are lowlifes.

db is correct. Lysenkoism and the Blank Slate are recent politically charged 'scientific' theories that have had destructive consequences. If there is a single fight to fight, it is against illogic.

Sorry, Gary. I read too much into your remark.

Since I am in the class of non-Objectivists, I will say that I am closer to being an Objectivist than any other pigeonhole; when not in the Gulch, I have referred to myself by that tag. So: What do YOU call someone who is in general an Objectivist, but who deviates from defined parameters in some respect, such as religion?

Then many who are present in this virtual Gulch are not Objectivists, but they are here all the same. Their views are worth listening to and I observe that, other than religion, their approach to life is rational. Most of these people willingly state that they consider their religion to be outside of Objectivism. Perhaps "Objectivist other than belief in religion" is the correct term for these people, but that is a bit unhandy.

I do not happen to be religious, but I do sometimes disagree with other statements that are tagged as cannon Objectivist, so I do not call myself "Objectivist" on this list.

If she never spoke about anything other than molecular bio, you might be right. But if Sarah spoke up about her views on politics, then her grades and prospects in molecular bio could be negatively influenced - read some of the stories on this thread (and the news, which is talking about safe spaces a lot).

I tried to look up "ace erasure" and found some comments but no technical definition. It seems to refer to a disapproval of someone choosing a solitary lifestyle. Can you clarify?

Sure. You have a peculiar problem in that you are the person that "Safe" zones are trying to exclude. Getting an education in such an environment will be no easy task.

    Good luck.

    Thinking:

Does it matter where you go for your undergrad degree, if you intend to go on for your PhD?

Perhaps...the best solution may be to go to Florida Tech for your BS. Four years from now, FT might have CRISPR or CRISPR might be old hat by then and you would need to set your sights on the even-newer tech somewhere.

This would allow you to get the feel of the ropes of the academic system at a college that at least tolerates diversity (!), Florida Tech, and then transfer somewhere else for grad/postgrad work. (And you would be able to talk to jbrenner!)

I consider this rather humorous, and bravo to the Catholics for not doing more than protesting it. From many years in a Catholic school: Most of the recent (late Medieval on) depictions of Jesus make him look just like this: An effeminate nominally make person with long hair and ethereal features.

I can see where they got this idea.

Posted by $ jlc 10 years, 6 months ago to [Ask the Gulch] Border fence II? Why a fence to the south and not to the north?
    I say again: Gas Laws!

As long as we operate in an ecology where there are jobs or fee support going unfilled in the US when there are starving people in Mexico, no fence nor law will keep them out. The solution is to (a) end all welfare support for illegals, (b) deport them and their baby families immediately, (c) allow any worker with a Visa to come to the US an make money and send it home/go home.

Once we have shut off the welfare and have robots picking strawberries for less than casual labor costs the immigration will cease. We will not need a fence.

This problem needs a solution, not killing, not liberal ideology.

A martial arts student of mine (beautiful, brilliant, fortunately something of a smart ass or she would have been unendurable) was doing research in Maui when 9/11 happened. For a short time, she had anxiety over the flight back to the mainland. I told her that her plane would have absolutely no problems, because if someone tried to take it over, she would be the First One over the back of the seats to take out the terrorists. “oh. OH. OKaaay.”

She boarded the plane right after an elderly man with a wooden cane; she watched where he placed it. (The martial art we do might loosely be termed a type of stick fighting.) After that, she relaxed and enjoyed the flight –because she knew that she could personally take out several box-knife armed men with that cane. (And every man on the flight would then have joined on her side…or their penises would have fallen off.)

Do you have the academic legs to go to MIT? I am seeing a lot of CRISPR work done there (more than at CalTech, though there is some there too).

(You would have to keep your mouth shut - really the only course to steer. I am rather too outspoken for this to work well.)

The problem is that a science department does not live in an ideal world. Your world view, were it to be known, might well influence your grades and your prospects.

Would you be comfortable spending 6 or 8 years holding your cards very close to your chest?

    Sarah Montalbano -

johnpe asked me to look into this, but I can give you no advice that is better than jbrenner's. As a molecular biologist, you want to go somewhere that is a hotbed of CRISPR and Cas9 research, but Doudna (one of the main developers of that tech) is from Berkeley (with all that implies).

CRISPR tech is well dispersed in industry, which probably means in Higher Ed as well. If Florida Tech is doing active research in CRISPR as part of having a good molecular bio dpt, then you should start with it at the top of your list.

I could not find a CATO or other source that ranked the US universities per reasonable standards. Does anyone else have such a list for Sarah?
