Assange charge with 18 counts related to Chelse Manning Document Leak

One of these counts is coordinating with Manning to publish the documents. When the pentagon papers were published by the NYT they wer not held to account becausing publishing the documents was not a crime only stealing them was. By extensionAssange should not be charged since he published them but did not steal them. The actual wording is a little odd stating "...coordinating with Manning to leak classified national security docs"
Is that what the NYT did in the Pentagon Papers case? If someone has the details of that case please let me know the reference.

    Seems like the NYT should have been charged. Maybe the Pentagon Papers weren't classified per se? I don't think the medium matters (secret microfilm at a dead drop, wikileaks, NYT). If you help yourself (and our enemies) to classified docs, you are committing a crime.
