Michelle Obama Just Declared War On This Beloved Restaurant, And You Won’t Be Happy About It | American Overlook

Wait a minute: "But under the first lady’s new school lunch guidelines, these schools can no longer sell Chik-fil-A, as the typical sandwich is 90 calories over the maximum caloric intake for an “entree item.”" who died and promoted the First Lady of Obamanation to be in charge of OUR kids lunch? And it's not even school lunch, it is outside it. Here is one of those "Power corrupts" stories.

I find it quite irritating that some use their freedom to tell others what freedom they should not exercise. Neither she nor her husband have the right or legitimate power to do much of what they wish. They are not the first, but they are some of the most aggressive and oppressive.

Sherman: What will you do to win the votes of the Americans who are atheists?
Bush: I guess I'm pretty weak in the atheist community. Faith in God is important to me.
Sherman: Surely you recognize the equal citizenship and patriotism of Americans who are atheists?
Bush: No, I don't know that atheists should be considered as citizens, nor should they be considered patriots. This is one nation under God.
Sherman (somewhat taken aback): Do you support as a sound constitutional principle the separation of state and church?
Bush: Yes, I support the separation of church and state. I'm just not very high on atheists.

      1. "To the victors belong the spoils." -- Andrew Jackson.

      2. "Roscoe Conkling, Offense of the Spoils System, 1877
A longtime U.S. Senator from New York, Roscoe Conkling was a power in Republican Party circles in the years following the Civil War. He was an ardent defender of the politics of patronage, whereby the party in power was free to appoint its loyalists to positions in the government bureaucracy. Conkling, like most professional politicians of his day, believed that the bureaucracy could not be separated from partisan politics. Civil service reform of the federal government would greatly diminish the enormous personal power of men like Conkling. At a convention of the New York State Republican Party, Conkling attacked fellow Republican and civil service reformer George W. Curtis. This speech gives a good sense of the acrimonious rhetoric that characterized late nineteenth century politics." -- http://wps.prenhall.com/wps/media/object...

      3. "The basis for each postal appointment was the party service rendered by each appointee. In some cases very unpopular and even unqualified persons were appointed."* Post offices were grouped into four classes according to the amount of revenue they generated. In 1911, President William Howard Taft placed all fourth-class post offices under the jurisdiction of the Civil Service
      Commission.**

      4. "After the assassination of James A. Garfield by a rejected office-seeker in 1881, the calls for civil service reform intensified. Moderation of the spoils system at the federal level came with the passage of the Pendleton Act in 1883, which created a bipartisan Civil Service Commission to evaluate job candidates on a nonpartisan merit basis. While few jobs were covered under the law initially, the law allowed the President to transfer jobs and their current holders into the system, thus giving the holder a permanent job. The Pendleton Act's reach was expanded as the two main political parties alternated control of the White House every election between 1884 and 1896." -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spoils_syst...

Actually, to the victor belongs the spoils predates Jackson by at least 2,000 years.

Thanks for pointing out some of the unintended consequences of the Confederate War...

During the Reagan Administration, they wanted to prove that school lunches were nutritious by calling ketchup a vegetable. The problem is having the federal government involved at all. On the other point, I do not _love_ Chick-fil-A. I _love_ no restaurant, and probably no business at all. Love is for people and maybe for animals, but not for corporations. I have never in my life eaten at a Chick-fil-A. So, this tug at the heart strings over fried chicken means nothing to me. As for the First Lady, here in Austin, Lady Bird Johnson is holier than Mary, and for what? Nancy Reagan consulted astrologers - something Ayn Rand would not have found surprising, given her view of Ronald Reagan's mysticist allies. Just sayin'... You do not like the President and First Lady. So, nothing they do will be good; everything they do will be bad. Either way, there is not much you can do about it.

How about that producers strike against the State of Minnesota over gold and silver sales?

I do not like the President and First Lady, but I will give them credit for the following. They have raised a family that is still intact. Secondly, I will give the president credit for golfing, a game that reveals character. Thirdly, he is not bad at basketball. Fourthly, he does pretty well at making picks for the NCAA basketball tournament. Other than that ...

Couple thoughts: I too have never eaten at chick Fil A, but having been fed on 2 occasions by our cafeteria staff in 4 years and being a passionate diner, I say go chick Fil A go please set up next to our school.
OK I promise to not visit or transact in gold or silver in Minnesota until this is settled.

The only thing I get from animals is nutrition.

The phrase that gets me is "under the first lady's guidelines" shut up and raise your own kids, someone take away her pulpit. But I know that won't happen, she's a star and we clearly have a "cult of the Presidency"

      Happy Monday, Carpe Diem!

They didn't want to "prove" anything. They wanted to get around... regulation... regarding school lunches, iirc.

Love is *maybe* for animals? Impressive the control you have over your emotions.

"Ayn Rand would not have found surprising, given her view of Ronald Reagan's mysticist allies."

And why do you care what Ayn Rand's opinion of someone else's hobbies is? Morally Rand was a despot, but I don't judge her by her personal failings, only by the merits and failings of her philosophy.

We do not have a President and First Lady. And I find it telling that you feel compelled to defend Michelle Obama. Even more telling is that you didn't use examples of real First Ladies assuming powers not granted them by the Constitution, such as Nancy Reagan's "Just say no" campaign, Laura Bush's library campaign, and Hillary Clinton's Hillarycare initiative.

You must get no pleasure from life if you love nothing IN life....

Beside the fact that someone with her figure shouldn't be lecturing to anyone else.....
Next time I go to the not so big city it will be Red Robin for lunch and some takeout from Arby's on the way home. I've never lived near a Chic-fil-A that I'm aware of, and there are no Panera Breads around here either.

I would think people here would approve of this.

After all, Chik-fil-A promotes Christian values.

And we have a God-given right to be protected from exposure to Christianity in our schools, even in the form of delicious chicken sandwiches.
    /sarc

I hope in many of these school districts Chick-fil-A opens a franchise right across the street from the schools. Hell, I'd contribute to a fund to do exactly that.

      Some will...

      Many of us won't.

I sure don't approve of it.

Chic-Fil-A is not convenient for me to patronize unfortunately, but I feel a support trip for myself and my wife in the offing. Convenient or not.

    We
    have
    no
    First Lady.

    Article 2, section 1, clause 5.

And as we are a republic and not a monarchy, even when we did have a First Lady, she had no standing or authority in government. No role beyond being the President's bed-mate. Michelle Obama has no standing to set caloric rates for school lunches, or anything else. She has no authority to enforce her school lunch guidelines.

It used to tick me off royally when Laura Bush, Hillary, even Nancy Reagan would try to use their non-position as "First Lady" to promote societal changes, something their husbands didn't even have the authority to do.
