Facebook is going to use Snopes and other fact-checkers to combat and bury 'fake news'

Is this what we've become - a society where some "unbiased" arbiter tells us what to believe and what to not believe by a "fake news" label? By whose measure is it fake? I saw a meme on Facebook showing that CNN and USA Today were considered "Mainstream (minimal partisan bias)". Really? See for yourself: http://imgur.com/7xHaUXf

For some, farcebook and the daily show are the only source of information. Years back, I joined farcebook at the prodding of some friends. Once I became tired of seeing the "beautiful meal" they had prepared or the "cute outfit" they had on their dog, I exited. My girlfriend still uses it. Some of the things she shows me are just stupifying.

Please see my response above to William Shipley.
Facebook is free to do what they want.

Using Snopes is a joke. It is comparable to putting the Mafia on a crime commission and giving it veto power. So...who will be the fact checkers? At first glance it seems like a simple question, but one must choose people of integrity who are willing to serve. Good luck with that. Each of us including the "Great Unwashed" must learn to be suspicious and check things out for themselves and then be willing to defend the truth.

"The Supreme Court may need to take this anti-constitutional issue against freedom of the press on."
Would this apply to all sites an apps that provide links to news or just FB?

Facebook already "buries" enough stuff! Has anyone noticed the "Most Wonderful Time in Eight Years" music video was (re)moved...though, we did find it, again.

This reminds me of the argument that somebody on a terror watch list shouldn't be able to buy a gun. A dummy I worked with was openly voicing agreement with that policy until I said, "Who makes the list? What if you're on it?" ...(blank stare)

Who checks the checkers? Only 15% of Americans will understand that... Don't think for yourself. Just agree with the talking point as broadcast by the news media.

Hi Freedomforall Thanks for farcebook I will steal that for future use.
I have said that "farcebook" is like digging thru a garbage pile you have to search through alot of stinky trash to find something good.

Wow, talk about biased! Snopes is so in the tank for Hillary, they are a former teacher and very liberal. They never saw a liberal story they did like and they never do real research about conservatives.

Does anyone actually get their news from Facebook?
For that matter, where do people get their news now?
I haven't watched a live news broadcast for years.
I guess my main sources are a handful of bookmarked sites and the radio.

That's not what we're becoming but rather what we were for much of human history until now. The press was only free to those who owned a printing press and then later a radio or TV staton. Now we can click on a website or app of our choice and decide for ourselves.

With such "fact-checkers", the Wikileaks exposure of the DNC scandals in 2016 would have remained unknown. There was a time during one of the debates when a moderator mentioned Politico being used as a fact-checker. Trump appropriately rolled his eyes.

The old Dino, Allosaur calls the mad downer "squeaks".If I see A Down vote for a post without a comment , particularly one of interest is an enigma.

It doesn't matter what Facebook does, as long as Trump has a Twitter account. :-)

Exactly. We might not know about the "love child" of John Edwards or Monica Lewinsky's stained dress had The Enquirer or The Drudge Report been deemed to be "fake news"... Both being examples of factual and significant political events uncovered by sources other than the MSM.

Yes . The thought I have is that an "approved list of news sources" approved by biased fact checkers either way is taking away my right to discern and the shots across the bow against "fake news" . Fake maybe , but it may just be damning news or facts that the controllers want to hide. that very well could be what is happening. The soviet state , controlled the media same with China. Is that not what this is all about?
