Oh it definitely is used as a slur but the word itself and it's varied connotations are from the left in Europe.

A Republican told me alt-right was a word invented by Democrats as a slur. He said alt-right = Nazi = extreme Republican, attempting to imply that Republicans are on the Nazi spectrum.

Again...very, tentatively...agreed. hiltery would be a hellsaster.
