I've got a cousin that keeps sending me stuff from the DNC. I got tired of countering them. They are so slanted and in many cases outright lies that I said F*** it and just stopped bothering with them. I think that you are using the phrase "they think" when you mean "they believe."

I would contend that they have, early on, been taught and have accepted that the practice of their craft is one which is more noble and "profound" than mere grubby materialism.

They then simply behave as if it is, with any concession to the other "greedy" and "selfish" pursuers of the material values of human existence, as those who lack the virtues of which they and their craft excels.
