After that, just for the hell of it, read this:

http://www.ask.com/wiki/New_Utopia

The New Utopia web site describes how a now deceased Ayn Rand fan suggested building a private island about equidistant between Honduras and the Cayman Islands on top of a submerged ridge. The ridge is about 20 meters deep. The AR fan suggested building on concrete blocks, but there are better ways. The great thing about this approach is that all islands in the world are claimed by some government. This is outside the territorial waters of any country, although technically in the economic zones of Honduras and the Cayman Islands.

The place I recommend below referred to as New Utopia is about as close as we will find to "international waters", unless we could purchase an oil rig or build a floating city like Robbie forwarded "Atlantis found" this weekend.

    Good morning jbrenner,

Unfortunate. I wonder if there are any areas where the sea bed is shallow enough to build up and create an Island on in international waters. In the past when Oil rigs were permanent stationary structures I recall hearing about the abandoned ones being purchased by private concerns and they set up their own micro nations with their own laws... Some have contemplated building floating cities... possibilities...
It may one day come down to colonies on Mars Like in Mr. Ashinoff's book Shadows Live Under Seashells...

Economic zones go for over 200 miles, 250 miles if I remember right. There is no potential island that would be outside any country's economic zone unless you count Antarctica. I'm not heading to Antarctica.

    Hello jbrenner,
I like the idea. Is there anywhere in international waters where this might be accomplished with less risk of a government making claim. A base on the moon might have better chance of retaining autonomy/sovereignty... If we could only re-invigorate the spirit of 76... the Liberty lost might be reacquired and respected where we are...

If it's a reef, no doubt there will be greenies that would seek to block any development.
