Orchid tour to Sabah, Borneo

Starting in Kota Kinabalu 26 Sept, finishing there 7 Oct - this is costing me MYR 4538 pp twin share, or roughly USD 1390pp - join us! 3 days on Mr Kinabalu ( going from altitude 1700. to 2600m ) with a guide looking at orchids and the amazing jungle environment in general if you aren't into orchids as such. Other days I am going to botanical sites but the company offers day tours to beaches, orang-utans, weird monkeys, historical and tribal sites. My money - I earned it - I was there with same tour company in 2011 and fit, adventurous Producers or your orchid-nut friends are very welcome to join us.

    Is your friend in kota kinabalu? We have 2 free days there.
    Hell 1942 tough times.
    I am pretty well read on what was happening, but from the safety of my home, in 2014.

    A Chinese Malaysian friend collects and grows rare jungle orchids. Malaysia has 2,000 species. My brothers in-laws and sister in-law scuba dive out of Semporna and dive Pulua Sepadan in the Macassa Strait. Late father fought there in 1942 at Teluk Balakpapan.

    I will post a picture when it blooms. It really has to be a tough little plant at my house because I really am no equipped to humidifiers and such.

    that's cool to see the buds. Can you post a pic when it blooms? I can manage the diurnal temp change year round no problem and in the dry summer I use a humidifer - fill it up with 3 litres of water each morning.
    20F, that's a chill!
    I grow mainly cattleya alliance and sarchochilus, but my interest in native orchids here and in their natural environment anywhere is what is taking me back to Mt Kinabalu and various places in Sabah.

    I can get 20*F in the winter. The humidity would be a problem, it's dry here. It's finally blooming. Big fat bulbs, so the flowers should be pretty. I don't know what I did different, if anything though.

    Might need a greenhouse (depending on your location.) A friend of mine "waters" her orchids with ice cubes, and mixes some fertilizer in the water for the cubes. She gets flowers but claims she needs a more controlled environment for real success. (They need 20-degree F day/night temp variance and 60-80pct humidity, so not what you'd have in your house and probably not the local climate.)

    Yup Mt Kinabalu and strange plants is actually my idea of fun. I wouldnt claim expertise but can claim enthusiasm and sound knowledge and its a way to meet great folks.
