Jeb Bush Right on Illegal Immigration

This appeared on The Atlas Society website. I understand people come to this country illegally for a better life but when we go after American Ranchers with weapons and helicopters for breaking the law I don't see how we just turn our back and allow this to go on. If its too hard to come here legally then change the law don't ignore it.

While I am not opposed to immigration and believe that streamlining citizenship processes should be a priority, I cannot hold with the argument that we should simply turn a blind eye to illegal immigration. I steadfastly hold to the position that if immigrants, illegal or otherwise, (or citizens for that matter) don't pay into the tax base they have no right to the benefits it provides. The benefits in question may be our overly generous social programs, or they may be the less tangible benefits (roads, public works, defense, etc.), if a person didn't pay into the pot that provided them that person should not be reaping the benefits of them. My position is this: if you pay your fair share ...welcome, if not go home you freeloading looter.

I know a few guys that use Mexican labor. Their is a process to go thru and do it right. Not sure why some can do it but others say its too difficult. The ones I have met have been hard working and polite. As you say streamline the process, don't ignore it.

I love this topic because you find so many different opinions about it on this page. Immigration has and always will be an economic argument. I never understood why the government never promoted a type of visa where the potential immigrant registers with USCIS, pays a fee, and is given a temporary work permit and a TAX ID number for 3 years. As long as they commit no crime and have stayed consistently employed (from IRS records), they should be able to extend their stay or apply for permanent status. Now lets say, anyone currently living illegally in the US can only qualify if they return to their home country, pay a fine, and apply in this manner. Can anyone object to that?

I can. Can we remove all freebies from being part of the equation? I seriously don't see that EVER happening in the current climate of this country...and until it does I won't be on board with any of these ideas. I live in AZ and witness the blatant, in your face, robbery every day.

My approach is to give a legitimate path to legal status, citizenship is not automatic, it never has been and it never will be. Those who choose not too would simply be subject to deportation, however those who choose to comply and pay the fine have a way to become productive. Can you explain how I am condoning freebies?

Because eliminating them wasn't part of your plan. You didn't mention freebies at all...and freebies are a huge draw to come here and is a huge cost to the rest of us and it's stealing on top of coming here illegally. Even if they came here legally it shouldn't be part of the package. The Irish didn't freebies when they got off the boat, heck the didn't WANT freebies. Freeloaders need not apply. If this is not on the top of the list of criteria then it give the appearance of condoning. Was that not a rational deduction?

Perhaps I was assuming knowledge of the current immigration system on your part. As someone who has gone through the legal process, during the application process, at least in my case, the attorney told me that the sponsor cannot be dependent on any form of government assistance, the sponsor (employer or individual) has to show that they can support the new immigrant financially and not be a drain on society. In the case of a new law, of course this would have to be considered with some type of restriction on welfare benefits until permanent residency or citizenship is obtained (this takes years currently and always will and requires paying a lot of fees and a lot of effort). I understand your point about immigrants in the past and agree that attitudes were a little different back then, the idea is that if you didn't do certain things you would starve, and most of them did immigrate due to famine. I simply think that this would be a fair way to weed out the ones who are actually looking to work versus those who have no intention of being a productive member of society. I simply have a hard time believing that every illegal immigrant in this country is just a parasite looking for a free ride.

No..not every one of them...but this country rolls out a red carpet and a cornucopia of goodies for anyone and everyone willing to reach an arm's length... so that stipulation would need to be spelled out and highlighted and underscored loudly. Being self sufficient and responsible for your own should be the rule... and actually that should be across the board for all able bodied adults living in the U.S. anyway.

I think some of the employers benefiting from these folks coming here illegally like having that hanging over their heads. Many politicians like keeping it as an unresolved issue. I like your approach. I think it would work.
