Social-Emotional Programs Target Students' Long-Term Behavior - Education Week Teacher

I had a quick discussion with a teach today about how one of our students seems to be nearly emotionless (very smart, not an angry kid or violent, the student just does things that gets him into trouble..reprimands get next to no response), anyway at one point she tried blaming it on video games I disagreed, then she said, "Well he hasn't been taught emotions". I was surprised by that comment. Do we 'teach' emotions to our kids? Aren't they already there? So, I started to do a search about learning emotion and stumbled onto this article (which is not related to what I was looking for, really), but the idea that teachers are teaching kids all about emotions, seems odd to me, and frankly scary. Talking about the classroom being a 'safe' environment to discuss these things and referring to the "class family". Um..no, the class is NOT your family and emotions are your own...you don't need to have them on display and talk about them. What happened to privacy and minding your own business?
The schools think they own our kids and nothing is sacred to their REAL families.
