I have read Ridley's The Rational Optimist and it is very flawed as I pointed out in my other comment. I looked up a book review of his Evolution of Everything. Ridley's ideas in this book are just a rehash of Hayek ideas on Cultural Evolution. Hayek's idea was that societies make changes slowly (learn) and those societies that make the right changes, which we cannot determine beforehand with reason, thrive and those that make the wrong change, which we cannot determine beforehand with reason, fail.

Dale - I'm currently reading The Evolution of Everything by Matt Ridley. Fascinating, however I'll need to re-read the chapter discussing the evolution of the human mind as I don't think I understood a lot of it, particularly his observations about consciousness and free will. Are you familiar with his work?
