I have a Google alert setup to notify me each day of anything that gets published with "Ayn Rand" or "Atlas Shrugged" in it. Each day I page through the articles and read rants by individuals who have obviously never read any of Ayn Rands work. I read articles where she is denounced for a variety of reasons never with any specific examples behind the words. This morning, I was pleasantly surprised to come across this article.

"Nonetheless, she adhered to her principles when it was easy to abandon them. She stood up for Western Civilization at a time when much of academia thought it to be repugnant. She persevered in the face of too many hardships to mention, and did so with the utmost integrity. In short, Ayn Rand lived the American Dream in the most comprehensive sense imaginable."

    According to Joseph Cotto,
"Rand was born into a family of wealthy Jewish merchants in St. Petersburg, Russia during 1905."
Other sources tell us that her father was a pharmacist with his own shop.

The article is somewhat apologetic as if directed to a hostile readership.

However, the quote, "She stood up for Western Civilization at a time when much of academia thought it to be repugnant" is interesting, since this negativity is growing among our chattering classes, there is something suicidal about it.
