Ideally, the actor playing John Galt in Atlas Shrugged Part 3 will appear to have jumped right off of the pages of Atlas Shrugged. However, in our quest to find the perfect John Galt, some tough choices may have to be made. That's where you come in.

If you had to choose, which would you consider the number one priority in casting John Galt?

A. As long as the actor looks and acts like John Galt, I don't care what his personal beliefs are.
B. The actor needs to possess a deep understanding of, and passion for, Ayn Rand's ideas first and foremost.

I think he's intense and of good maturity to have developed his knowledge of the domino effect... and just the right touch of ruggedness! Thanks for agreeing!

What nonsense. Imagine the effort you'd have to go through if only a Nazi could play Hitler, or only a Democrat could play FDR. This is airhead thinking. Actors are paid to look and sound. What they believe when they're at home is of no consequence. But hire an Objectivist who talks like Elmer Fudd and Part 3 is going to sink lower than Part 2 did on its worst day. I give these people credit for perseverance but this movie series is destroying a great book. With DVDs this thing is never going to go away.

First off Rand Paul is ANYTHING but Ayn Rand's "ideal man." Secondly, she would reject him for his views on religion and abortion. Paul is neither an Objectivies nor a Libertarian. He's another nutcase Christer. One can only hope he'd be less an embarrassment as an actor than he is as a senator, but I don't hold much hope.

    How about Paul Johansen?

This should've been a mini-series, by the way.

    Other actors for Galt.
    Mathew Modine,
    Robert Downey Jr.,

I want to be James Taggart this time, please. Thank you.

Jim Caviezel would be the Choice as John Galt ! As far as Dagny ... I loved Taylor Schilling in the role. However, kudos to Samantha Mathis. As far as Francisco de Anconia, Esai Morales was not as imposing a figure as Jsu Garcia. Jsu plyed it well; in Part 1 he reflected the tortured conflict of Francisco d' Anconia; that is, to serve his principles while destroying the things he loved most Dagnu and D'Anconia Copper. I'd like to see him in the role again; but w/o the conflict. Also, he looks more like Spaniard from Which Franciso is descended from. Esai, regretably does not look like a full blooded Spaniard.

there SHOULD be a new Fountainhead made. the original is very wooden and the actors are too old. sort of like the original Pride & Prejudice cast. in fact, it should be a miniseries -- would be stellar.

i agree that Guy Pearce would be a good choice. Caveziel is jesus, not Galt -- unfortunately for him and for us. it would be like having the same actor who played hitler play Churchill. i still think that Adrien Brody could pull it off tremendously -- his work ethic is Galtian, and he's a man who can fit into a crowd AND stand out when he chooses to.

If an A list actor loved the book, there's a chance they'd take the role just for the chance to be involved. It may not be a probability, but it's a possibility.

I hate to break it to you, folks but as of part 2, Dagny is a woman pushing 50. Ms. Mathis reads like a well-nurtured New York matron of about 50. She'll never see 37 again.

I am so glad to see this search being taken seriously! Your choice for Rearden in 2 was believable and powerful. You'll need even more for Galt. It that fails...If someone fits the bill for this in presence and delivery, it won't matter if they 'believe or not believe'; their ability will fit within Rand's realm. I've seen plenty of people who say they love Rand's writings but who fail to impress with their abilities. What they profess may or may not matter. What matters is if they deliver.

A of course. A professional actor does what's required. Was Gary Cooper an ardent Objectivist? Yet I'm not sure there is an actor today who would not suffer by comparison in the role of Howard Roark. The important thing is to make the film look good. Be consistent. Don't make a hash of it as you did with part 2. Actors are hired for how they look and how they sound not what they believe when they're off set. That you even ask this question makes me wonder what you're doing, making a movie or starting a church?.

Starfall hit me like a ton of bricks! THIS is Bond. There are very few actors as nice to look at as Timothy Dalton, but I haven't believed any of them them to be Bond since Connery gave it up.
for Galt? Oh, please. Read the description and let me know what part of it he fits - determination, possibly, but really......

So he's 5-6 years older than John Galt at the of his speech. Perhaps 45 is the new 39 ;^)

If they're gone too far, nothing - not even the common sense of Objectivism - will bring them back, no more than putting a piece of rotten meat in a butcher case would make it fresh. Sad, but some are truly just too far gone to save...

I entirely agree - if Dagny is a woman in her mid-late 30's (37 IIRC), Galt BETTER be about her age. With the understated sexuality between the two of them (and everyone in Atlantis picked up on it) if there's too much disparity between them age wise it won't work. Think about it - Galt works as a younger low level track worker, and has for 12 years, after working for 20thcentury (and only leaving it when it went from a good company to a worker's collectivist nightmare). Add to this - Galt, De Anconia, and Danneskjold are ALL classmates, which also means they have to be about the same age. Dr. Akston is their professor, and unless he's in his 90's, that means the trio (and Dagny) should be in the same age bracket.
