My Letter to my Gun-Free Gym - Rachel Mills

I find the "Gun-Free" signs to be ridiculous. To me, it's similar to yelling "Don't look!"

The author of this letter, found at the Liberty.me site, writes rather honestly. I believe this adds even more impact to her letter.

Cops come AFTER the perp has fired and killed people. A person with a concealed weapon can help DURING the time the perp is killing.

Gun-free zones are just pure political correctness. The best defense you can have is an unknown person with a concealed weapon, and the fact the perp who would shoot up the gym doesnt know WHO has a concealed weapon.

That was my first thought but $1M seems lame. It seems to me asking law-abiding people not to be armed morally requires them to provide an armed guard and/or a metal detector or something.

Establishments that do this should be forced to carry an insurance policy - life insurance on anybody killed there in an act of violence....Let's say about $1M/each. I think that might be a reasonable compromise.

I think the lady wrote a good letter, but I think she
should definitely quit taking her kids there, should
she elect to continue going there herself. She should not put them at risk so that she can get fit
    exercise.

I wonder there were a gun crime there if the gym could be held liable for putting up the sign and doing no checking, not even a cheap metal detector you walk through, essentially ensuring that only strict law-abiders are disarmed. If someone tried to commit a gun crime, they'd be relying on people like Allosaur who are otherwise law-abiding but sometimes ignore the no-gun signs.

You are correct about the classroom environment. I guess the two reasons I took issue with the policy was:
    1. I am an experienced gun owner and
    2. The class I was attending was for Range Safety Officer, in which, I assumed we already had experienced gun owners.
Of course, it would make sense to have a single policy to cover all of your classes. I was just being bull-headed, I suppose.

You should do away with the FCC. People don't need bureaucracy to legislate volume controls. They can use a compressor/sustained to adjust and limit volume changes without government intervention. other than that, good start.

You sparked a memory. For about a year I was one of several per shift unarmed security guards for a collection of assorted stores on a property site called The Summit.
Sometimes the movie theater manager would have me ride with him as he took his ticket and concession stand income to the bank.
I felt quite foolish at this time. At least I had a hand radio to say, "Guys, call the cops!" if I did not get shot for doing as much.
I would have been fired if I had let on that I kept a pistol in my glove compartment of my personal vehicle.
Most of the time I drove a Guardsmark SUV about the property unarmed with these blinking green lights.

Something I have been meaning to add and it's a perfect place. Also describes Seattle.

Remember always the quote from Boiete.

The bank I go to is perfectly fine with my concealed carry on premises. I asked for and received permission to do so. I'm in there with deposits several times a week so not an unfamiliar face for them.

A good point, although I'd hate to be the guy who figures out the insurance premium if such an agreement were ever made.

I once wrote a letter to the owner of a gun-free zone. It was more succinct: 1) It's your business, so you can do with it what you please; 2) I promise not to bring my firearm into your establishment. However, since I exercise my right to carry this also means that I won't bring my person or my money in either.

The issue with firearms classes is completely different. In those classes, people handle guns in the open, practice and, by definition, are not yet trained. A likelihood of an accidental discharge is understandably high. Normal concealed carry has a very small risk of an accidental discharge as the gun is not being handled and certainly not in the open. If the reason for not allowing concealed carry in a non-classroom environment was given to you as "accidental discharge," it was a convenient lie.

    She's absolutely correct.
The progressive mindless political class(less) creatures are cowards. They do not seek to take guns from criminals, but the do seek to take them away from law abiding citizens...like that's gona work.
We suspect there are other motives involved here; but besides that we see they do not value life and the only value they have is the value they've stolen from you.

I may be wrong... it has been a few years since the concealed carry training, but in order for the sign to be 'legal' it is supposed to be a certain size, color and correct wording. Simply putting a notice on the door that says "gun free zone" I don't believe to be correct anyway. but.. concealed is just that. Who's to know?

I'd hate for that credit union to force me to move my money somewhere else for that no-no.
I've been a happy camper for a customer there for a quarter of a century after escaping a bank that had a fee for everything.
Oh, well, I know where another credit union is.
    Better than getting killed.
