Shadows Live Under Seashells: by Allan J. Ashinoff Book Review
Fiction-Thriller, 512 pgs. ISBN 9781494294625
This fantastic story is set in the year 2084. Space travel to the moon and on to Mars has become a commercial enterprise. The Earth has been transformed as have the people by a new world order. The Administration has created an earth divided between those that live under two different sets of rules and environments. Some are hold outs living outside of the domed cities in a world where they were not supposed to be able to survive, but the extreme environmental disasters as predicted by the doomsayers that drove most people into the Dome cities did not occur. The city dwellers were kept uninformed of the truth. The intrepid settlers on Mars live under a completely different set of circumstances and enjoy much more freedom while terra-forming the surface.
The Dome city dwellers are highly controlled. Their choices are limited, assigned, monitored and some are even technologically enhanced with implants. The “Eductors” or creative thinkers are enhanced and groomed to investigate and solve the world’s problems like supercomputer cyborgs. The protagonist of the story Elliot Finch is one of these “Eductors.” His world is turned upside down when his wife, unbeknownst to him, is arrested and taken off for re-education/ brainwashing and he is assigned to travel to Mars.
Horrible things are happening on Mars and Elliot is assigned to investigate. The tenuous control the Earth administrators have over the Mars colony is threatened and they will stop at nothing to maintain power. During Elliot’s investigation he learns more about the true state of things than the administration would like and his actions will threaten the entire order. Mars has a world with more personal autonomy than the earth allows and he likes it. In the end he will be the indispensable man to change the world, right wrongs and bring truth to the people.
It is a well written, thrilling story about a world that was, and a dystopian world that never should have come about. To find out how Elliot makes moves to stay ahead of the administration and bring about change and justice, you will have to read the book. If you enjoyed books like 1984, Agenda 21, A Brave New World, etc. you will find this an enjoyable addition to the genre.
It is a very exciting and enjoyable read.
