The time to do something effective has passed. All we can do is watch.

  We can start moving supplies so they will be ready for use if the shooting starts. Of course we could just stand by and the USSR be reconstituted and then assist the EU in becoming part of it as the Bear gobbles everything in western Europe.

    I don't think that seeing Russia re-expand to the borders it had during the era of the Soviet Union would necessarily be a bad thing. The problem with the Soviet Union had nothing to do with the geographical territory it occupied, but rather with the fact that its economic system was based on the theories of Communism and total government control. From what I understand, the current Russian government has recognized the inherent problems of Marxism, and no longer adheres to those principles.
    
    Of course its still possible to have government tyranny even when the country has a primarily capitalist economy, so it's difficult to draw any firm conclusions. But we do need to guard ourselves, and I think right now is a very, very bad time for the US to be doing a drawdown of its military or dismantling its warheads and other weapons.

      The constituent staes of the USSR are now free and independent states. For Russia to go back the the USSR model means those states would have to rejoin with Russia to form that entity. They are not likely to do so of their own volition. There is also the Muslim component of the equation. Most of the "stans" are Islamic and would rather fight that go back to the old way of life. I'm not sure that even Mongolia would willing return.
      However, it the Ukraine and then Georgia fall into the Russian union, they might to save bloodshed, but I don't think so.
