    3rd try:
John Galt is the indomitable, creative, caring, persistent, longsuffering human spirit within each of us which makes us worth our salt. He is the heart of ambition, the stuff of desire and the soul of love. He is us, at our best.

John Galt is the Alpha and Omega. The beginning and the end, as in the first and last letter of the word 'Individual'. Ok, I know you are saying the last letter is an 'L', but it is lower case, and if you squint it looks an awful lot like an upper case letter 'I'

John Galt is a man who could have only been born in America. He is the byproduct of freedom and the answer to thousands of years of failed philosophy. John Galt is the beginning of forever, and the end of the non thinking man.

It might not be what you are looking for, but the most concise and most clearest answer to me is what Dagny answers before she enters the first train running on the John Galt Line, one of the most brilliant scenes of the book/movie:

(Reporter) "Mrs. Taggart, who is John Galt?"
(Dagny, after a short pause) "We are!"

And yes, that's it. The most brilliant thing about it is that Dagny gives the right answer in an act of rebellion against moochers, looters and nay-sayers, without even knowing or assuming that it is indeed the right answer to that question.

And if you can give that answer without hesitation, truly from your heart, you understand what this is all about: We are. Not they.

"For twelve years, you have been asking: Who is John Galt? This is John Galt speaking. I am the man who loves his life. I am the man who does not sacrifice his love or his values. I am the man who has deprived you of victims and thus has destroyed your world..." -- JG atlas shrugged

John Galt is the hero in every person who stands up for his right to the product of his labors, especially when others try to take what is his through coercion.

    John Galt, the free man.
He will not live or work for you,
he does not want you to live or work for him.
He will neither give nor take -
but he will trade value for value.

Actually he quit 20th century motors - they made motors, not cars. He went to work for them AFTER college. His fellow workers were scared of him when he told them that "he would stop the motor of the world".
