They may also be particularly vulnerable to abuse as they can be blackmailed into keeping quiet because of the risk of 'bringing shame' on a community, she added."
When abuse is revealed some families are more likely to send the daughter abroad or hastily arrange a wedding to get rid of the problem rather than face it, the report claims.

'The biggest barrier that we need to address is the shame and honour card,' Ms Gohir said.

'They would rather protect the honour of the family and community than report an offender and protect other girls, as well as get the victim the counselling and help they need.'

She also added attitudes of young boys and men needed to change as often they did not see what they did as rape, and had no awareness of the impact of their actions on women.

It's amazing that they can get so many people to go along with the crime. Sure one person can be a criminal. He may have a friend or two. They may have a gang of thugs. But this implies they got people not in the gang involved. That's weird.

I don't get the "grooming" thing. It may be a regional difference. In the Midwest, I've heard any time a man talks to kids, some people considering it "grooming". If it's someone who has a history of violent crime, I understand, but the "grooming" thing becomes a blanket reason to accuse any man who talks to a child, even in a public place for a normal reason.

That is NOT what's happening here, but I reject any suggesting that "grooming" is akin to rape.

I guess this is a British term. When you have that many people and see this again and again-I'd say we have a cultural problem. I'd also postulate this tends to happen where people who are raised in countries where poverty is very high tend to dehumanize more. I think the poverty can be a factor, but the poverty persists due to the lack of natural rights protection by the culture or govt. so it persists even when the refugees settle elsewhere.

Yes, yes. Also, I think sometimes the parents move, and they take with them their cultural olive tree. The kids don't fit into the new culture, but aren't part of the parents' either. They're off on their own, feeling like pariahs, and at risk of extremists.

Even the cultures I disagree with most probably teach people not to rape. The kids who get snippets of the culture mixed with snippets of a freer culture are at risk of not getting either cultures' basic values.

Even with all this, it's beyond my understanding how so many people, even kids without a culture, could let this happen.

well, in cultures where women are property and shamed if anything like this happens to them, I can see where evil gets a strong foothold. You can read news daily out Pakistan and India where gangs of men rape women and beat them-sometimes resulting in death. Then the family does not accept the woman/child back into their home. These cultures do not value natural rights. I think you are absolutely correct about the refugees feeling displaced and therefore extra secretive. Evil can only thrive....

This is so far from what I understand that I cannot even get my mind around it. I imagine, perhaps wrongly, that even in these backward places people know violence is wrong and not the victim's fault. I don't have a conception of life in rural Pakistan or India. I imagine that religious people hold sway over the uneducated, and the educated people have all left for the city to be attorney, engineers, medical professionals, etc, leaving behind angry people who live a demon-haunted world, in which something new happening is seen as an omen from gods rather than something interesting. It's very hard to imagine.

I think you're saying that the people who committed this crime may have been from those areas, rather than my suggestion that they were more reasonable people who got radicalized.

I tend to think the people who think this behavior is okay are a minority even in the worst places on earth, but I don't really know that.

I disagree with what you are saying, but I cannot refute it because you will scream that I've crossed that invisible line again and that by doing so I'm somehow threatening you.

Such things happen in the United States all the time, by non-Moslems to non-Moslems. I will not say any more than that.

Oh! so the outrage is over *stories* of gang rapes.

Ever hear the term "pulling a train"?
Ever hear the organizational description, "biker gang"?

So, what's the upper limit you'd put on gang rape before it becomes outrageous and unacceptable? 20? 10? 2?
