I believe public education should be abolished (ex-
cept police academies, military training, and such),
and replaced with private schools and home-school-
ing. But as long as we have public schools, they
should do what they are supposed to do. If they
claim to teach history, they should teach real
history. If the people of South Dakota tolerate
this, and do not raise h--l with their school boards, they are unbelievably despicable fools.

This is so disappointing. I just came back from a visit to South Dakota last week. It is a beautiful state.
It is sad to realize the lack of cognitive and reasoning ability in those who govern the education of the next generation. I am including many parents in this indictment. The upcoming generation is being systematically stripped of decision-making ability by not giving them the background to this inform their decisions. We are bringing up the largest generation of "victims" the world has ever known.

Did you hear Rush Limbaugh today talk about the college kid who called 911 because she saw a mouse in her apartment? The parents and teachers of these kids have turned them into the most babied and mindless generation ever. They have no life skills. But boy, do they know about global warming and endangered species.

It is not "the lack of cognitive and reasoning ability", it is the deliberate erasure of the ability of our children to think for themselves. John Dewey, the father of modern education, wrote

"I believe that we violate the child's nature and render difficult the best ethical results, by introducing the child too abruptly to a number of special studies, of reading, writing, geography, etc., out of relation to this social life" and.

" I believe, therefore, that the true centre of correlation of the school subjects is not science, nor literature, nor history, nor geography, but the child's own social activities."

Though long dead, his ideas still rule our classrooms.

Pretty interesting....usually they drop things like the constitution so we can study about things like slavery and the "Native Americans" and how whitey is the focus of all evil in the world. This looks just like a reduction in teaching in general with the only goal I can see, to save money! If they are going to generally reduce teaching in the schools....what are they going to do while babysitting the little darlings....because babysitting seems to be the only thing the schools do.

They don't babysit, unless it's to let the inmates run the asylum. Babysitting used to mean that certain mores were taught and enforced, unlike the circus that's now accepted as "good" teaching.

I agree! I teach in the system, and we just finished Anthem by Rand and Harrison Bergeron by Vonnegut. Nearly every one of them said this was the FIRST novel they read. They are sophomore. I told them today how this pubically indoctrination keeps me up at night wondering what kind of world we are being dragged to? A Road to Serfdom!

Home schooling? All the text's needed are available on http://Amazon.com with a kindle and most are zero charge. Whatever the school is lacking which means you won't have to get the third grade sex education down loads. This also means accepting a diploma from South Dakota will come under article four full faith and credit Here we go again. As for South Dakota? Give it back to the Sioux and Blackfeet

My kids are both in college- one a classically trained guitarist, the other seeking a degree in forensic science.

I've been talking history and politics with them at the dinner table since they were little. I didn't rely on the school system.

Why teach history at all.? Let the current crop of kids think that the USA just sprang into existence -- sorta like Adam & Eve.

With which crop should we start? Presumably before all of us are dead and the books burnt in a frenzy of ACLU witch hunting. We are already three decades in the hole. Start by voting against school budgets. If they are worthless why throw good money after bad? Remember they don't need a majority of citizens only a majority of those voting. one to zero is as good as a million to one. That is at the local level where many of us do have power. At least until obeyme federalizes the school systems.

Since my grandchildren are all adults(Born in the 90s) who seem to know the basics of American history I think we should start with the post millennia kids. They don't need knowledge. They live in a cyber world.

But they beg for it all the time! 'We don't need no ed ju kay shun.' is a cry for help. Generations now are only 12-15 years apart.

But the one's born Jan 2001 and later has you said will do nicely. though they are by modern standards at child bearing age.

That means I could be a great grandparent like my sister and she's younger than me? Nah.. I've made a career out being 39 and I'm sticking to it.

minus eleven. I still go shopping with a fairly large ruck sack. and bring back 30 - 40 kilos of whatever. and two shopping bags at 10 kilo each. But those days are starting to go. I think get half as much and make two trips to the store. Probably why everyone thinks I'm younger. But the next morning it really hurts to move!!! Either that or I'm going to dial back to 29 when people ask.

My age is determined by how much whatever I'm contemplating doing is going to hurt, starting tomorrow, and for how long. I still pay the price, but the last few weeks have compelled me to add "sometimes" to that, some of the time. Bette Davis was right, growing old is not for sissies. or, 80 is the new 60.

If I still had school age children now, I certainly would not put them in the public school system. There are so many things wrong with it now. I believe I would home school or find a charter school I liked. When my children were young I stayed home or worked part time, and I was at the school at least a couple of days a week volunteering my time so I could stay on top of what was happening in my child's classroom and in the school.

If you want to EDUCATE your kids, home school them. Download all the original documents from history, so the kids can learn what the original actors were looking at and thinking, not someone's interpretation of it. Go back thousands of years, to the Egyptians, Greeks, Chinese, Indians, Romans, etc., through the Federalist Papers, Declaration of Independence, Constitution, etc. They'll learn and UNDERSTAND a hell of a lot more than what they'll "learn" in a typical classroom.

There is also another mechanism I have found. I have made it a point on many matters, particularly civics, to actually acquire an edition that was published back in the day.

Example: I acquired a high school civics textbook published in 1894 written by a Constitutional scholar from Iowa. In it, he laid out how when the soon-to-become State of Utah would be admitted into the Union, the federal government would be "relieved" of the responsibility of managing the public lands within the new State. You guessed it - there is no Constitutional authority for the federal government to keep these lands upon statehood.

And this was being taught in High School. Gee.

In modern terms if one searches for a high school diploma under the standards of five decades ago one asks for a Bachelors Degree. When i see High School on a form I automatically assume illiteracy and deficient in mathematics and the sciences unless proven otherwise. I discount grades in any school as be useless. Put to the test when I assisted in scholarship selections my co examiners were shocked to find out close to mark my slings and arrows had struck. The exam was quite simple. "In your own handwriting state why you should receive a scholarship." One passed but then only one took the test.

The American University system has become the "education and propaganda arm" of the liberal-progressive movement. It is now more important to teach what to think than how to think.

The socialist hippies saw long ago that America was too powerful a military force and they listened to the propaganda of Lenin, Marx, and Stalin who instructed them to take over our education system. In 3 generations, the proles will be turning themselves over to us with no shots ever being necessary. It worked. The education has been subdued and so have the people. Brainless people do not resist.

I got as far in the article as the quote from Wilfred McClay: "“How can we call forth the acts of sacrifice that our democracy needs, not only on the battlefield but also in our daily lives—the acts of dedication to the common good that are at the heart of civilized life—" If history is being used as a propaganda platform in the public schools to teach altruistic sacrifice for the common good, perhaps its removal is a mixed blessing. Fortunately, for those who actually want to learn it, American and world history is more accessible than it has ever been.

This is a puzzling article because its agenda is not clear to me. Generally the dichotomy is [teach Slavery and Native Am but NOT the Constitution] or [teach the Constitution but NOT Slavery or the Native Am]. The former represents the current liberal PC stance; the latter represents the old-style whitewashing of American history; neither is accurate, of course.

But a program that espouses the removal of the first 100 years of American history does not play into either of these agendas. It does make me wonder if the program also omits world history prior to 1900.

I do not understand what is going on here.

That's one of my trademarks when I keep money out of the hands of wastrels especially in school districts. Sheep to the slaughter. It is a difficult job. only takes a vote of one to nothing to pass a budget. Invariably twelve years worth of parents can be frightened into carrying water for the ....moochers in that profession all without exception found in the administration offices. Those that can do those that can't teach those that can't teach administrate. Those that ant administrate become professors or work for the Department of Education. The usual winning threat equal in validity to shutting down government is cutting band, music, choir (no reaction yet?) and SPORTS!

Being a fan of Mr. Holland's Opus I would go straight to sports and turn the school into the far superior European or for that matter Mexican system.

So now it's my turn to have a leftist look in the mirror and describe himself in reference to me. I have truly arrived and am honored by the compliment. BwahahaHAHAhahahahhhhaHHAAHHAHA. What evil lurks in the minds of man? The Shadow knows.

That's a real one. you want more echo effect.

Maybe we shouldnt study the government indoctrination version of history if we really want to learn from it. My public school education was ridiculous at best, and evil at worst. I wasted so much time sitting in those classes when I could be really learning things I needed to know to prosper.

For the young people. GED at fifteen and on to something else. Then start voting against the school budget for K-12. There only purpose is friday night entertainment anyway. i'm going to paraphrase Zappa again. If you want your kids to become educated give them a library. It's spelled KINDLE If want them not to get paid send them to public schools.

South Dakota should have taken a lesson from Florida. Some few decades ago the Business Associations voted to drop the space for High School Education and use it for something useful. That started a trend reversal until Common Core showed up but I hear it's returning. The easy way is start advertising for entry level work stating Junior College required.

I have to say that I learned more from Youtube about technical stuff than I ever did in high school or college. I also learned more about history from the Hitler channel documentaries than I ever did in public school. I think the public schools are primarily government indoctrination centers and arent there for MY education.

Interesting you mentioned the Hitler Channel documentaries. I got a great laugh from that one.

But seriously, I have watched them to no end because the reality of that history scares the crap out of me. And always has since being a kid in the 60's. I got enough history from school as a kid to be aware enough, but the in-depth history is intense.

In some ways the fact that these Hitler and WWII documentaries are so popular is that there is a healthy interest coming from the younger generations in that history. A lot of it starts with the basic question of Daddy (now granddaddy), what did you do during the war? And it just goes from there. But in that, there is a good sign for hope.

Yeah, except the recruiters are all BA's, so they just write "Bachelor's Degree required" on everything and the high-level engineer who finds himself out of a job - and who didn't finish those last 3 hours of college and thus has no BSc - cannot convince them that being able to TEACH the damn classes is just as good as having TAKEN them 40 years ago and is thus unemployable. Letters after your name do not make you able to reason, as we see all around us.
I've never really believed in teaching, and I may be getting more militant about the entire educational "area behind the curtain". morons.
