In today's environment, critical infrastructure (power substations, railroad controls, etc) needs to be completely separated from the internet. I know a lot of convenience and efficiency can be gained through all this connectivity, but the risk from hacking or error is too great.

Similarly, I keep getting offers related to moving toward the "smart house" concept, where everything including the appliances is interconnected. I guess I'm just an old fuddy-duddy, but even for an old sci-fi fan like me, I can't think of a less appealing concept for a house. The last thing I want is to switch my heat pump off, and have it tell me; "I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that".

      Thanks for the laugh, Vette.
Partial solution is to do the critical things "wired" for security, and keep the server of the house isolated from any outside net (assuming the smart house is appealing.) Convenience vs security/privacy/liberty is the choice Americans must make wisely. Independent computers are a threat to the elite, and free services (temporarily) the cloud are being offered to tempt people away from the old model that serves the customer, not the elite. It's like the cable tv business was in its infancy, offering better picture and no commercials. Today its ubiquitous with 30% commercials and perverse programming.
