Microsoft has been trying to drive away customers for 10 years.
They may finally have found the way.

I wish your statement were correct!
There seems to be no limit to the punishment the sheep allow MS to inflict on them.
In earlier editions than 10, updating was when the user decided, yet still the default was when MS want to do it, and I understand that some updates changed the instructions from user to MS control.
Well it is not as bad as a government instruction, despite the near monopoly, there are alternatives.

Yes, there are alternatives. I expect to be using one of them in the future (likely a flavor of Linux.)
Personally, when I set up windows on a new machine I get security updates. then I don't update anything in the OS unless other software that I install requires an update or there is a specific threat that is overwhelming ... which rarely happens. Therefore, my computers are at risk from a determined hacker and some day I may have to deal with that issue. But I do have a firewall and virus software always updated and I have not had to deal with any problems created by MSFT updates recently.
For the majority in the flock MSFT's updates are not a problem. Based solely on my use, most security threats that are supposedly solved by the frequent updates have not been a problem either.

Maybe I should use Puppy Linux as it has an Australian designer. It just so happens that the flavor I use is from Houston Tx.
Just in case dbh will object so I will write small-
pclinuxos is free, and 'worse' I pay an annual donation which gives me no advantage at all. But there is a warm soggy feeling ..
Yes as you may expect the forum is a bit too collectivist, you can see me jumping in with both feet now and again.

          I like pclinuxos, too.
I installed PuppyLinux to run under MSFT's virtualpc software. When I switched to Virtualbox (much faster and easier to backup/transport data) I installed PCLinuxos there.
