La La La I Can’t Hear You - The Ignore Feature (BETA)

In the Gulch, everyone loves, respects, and admires everyone else. We always agree with each other on everything, and we never get upset or angry. Things never get heated, and we’re always rational and our best selves. My favorite times are when we get together and sing Kumbaya. Ahh… the memories.

Eh ehm.

Sometimes however, on a very rare occasion, people just rub each other the wrong way. And, while everyone always strives to make nice, sometimes you wish you could SHUT THOSE PEOPLE OFF.

Introducing… drum roll please... “Ignore.”

“Ignore” essentially provides you the ability to anonymously, and individually, “turn off” any other Gulch member at will.

Click the “Ignore” link located underneath any post title and all activity by the originating member will effectively collapse and be hidden from your view. FOREVER.

Mwu-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!

Some things to keep in mind:
1. This is a BETA. It’s not done and there may be bugs. Let us know if you run into anything odd.
2. When you click “Ignore”, you are electing to hide that member’s content across the site (“Ignore” is not isolated to any single post).
3. For now, the “Ignore” feature is device specific - if you ignore me (sdesapio) on your desktop, you will have to ignore me again on your smartphone or tablet.
4. You can un-ignore at anytime by clicking the “Un-ignore” link that will replace the ignore member’s content.

Go ahead, give it a shot. Ignore each other. ;)

I really liked the way you introduced this sdesapio. I was having a bad day and this just made it better. I have not yet seen anyone I couldn't ignore myself. The conversation gets a little dynamic at times, but the membership isn't to far from the Atlas Shrugged Gulch. Still, it sounds like a useful feature and I am sure I will use it at some point in time. I just wish you could come up with a "Ignore" button that worked outside of the Gulch.

Never have thought mechanical 'ignore' necessary in a polite society like the Gulch. If someone is offensive enough for me to 'ignore', then either I have not done a good job of communicating or the rational gulch moderator is nano-seconds from acting to resolve the problem to my satisfaction.
OTOH, I did almost come to blows (in real life) with someone who didn't react well to "we can disagree" (regarding voting for Jimmy Carter.)
Thanks for the feature, but I hope you (the moderator) never give me a reason to use it.
I also hope that I never give someone else reason to use it.

Yes there are times this would SEEM to be a good idea. But in our modern world we are not listening to each other now. So I am not sure how adding something that stops us from listening and sharing ideas because someone may be annoying helps us as a whole. We all have off days. As a general rule, if I don't want to hear or see what someone is saying I just move on. Scroll wheel is awesome.

don't bet on it... I don't see myself availing myself of this new "feature" any time soon.

I tend to use the "scroll wheel ignore" function if I feel the need, but it irks me to even have to make the "comment hidden due to low score" comments reappear. Hell, I'm curious as to what whoever said that got voted down so much.

And after a while, I can guess who posted it before 'unhiding it'... I'm just very curious.

      ......Whatever...

On OathKeepers our official "ignore" is the "Constitutional Dope Slap" or (CDS). The picture of a puppy with head titled sideways with question marks on both sides also appears. Wish I could steal your "Mwu-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!" but Gulchers don't do that sort of thingggggeeee.

I'd still prefer the up and down thumbs to mean "I agree" and "I disagree."

Maybe a new category for the "Reply | Mark as read..." line could be "WTF?!" Not as cute as the puppy, but ....

I have to start my reply by saying that I haven't spent much time in the Gulch lately - partly other obligations, partly it seems to have changed in a way I can't explain, but don't enjoy, and partly because my "reply" feature has gone the way of my "mark as read" feature.

And since I'm only a commenter, after all, not really a contributor, it just got too hard to be here.

So, what I have to say about the Ignore feature applies to the Gulch of, say, 6 weeks ago or so. There were posts that I wanted to ignore and so I did - I went right past them. There were posters I never read.

Now done, I find two features to object to. One, an ignore hides a member's post side wide. That means that one is saying, by using the ignore, that the person never has and never will have anything worthwhile to say. That's an incredibly harsh judgment, and as for the "in the future" part, probably untrue.
The other feature is the anonymity. I know everyone can't do this, but I think that if one is going take such a drastic action as erasing someone from their world, he should be able to at least tell his target.

I also have a question. If there is a problem which requires a solution this drastic, where was admin while the rancor was building? When people are unable to communicate, or constantly irritate other members, there should be someone to shut the tow parties is a room and not let them out until they agree on how to treat each other. and yes, I mean NOT LET THEM OUT.
That may have happened, but I saw no reference to it.
I imagine I'll be here - and there - but I know there will be a rash of "ignores" and anti-ignores and spite ignores and several I haven't thought of. Sounds rather sterile, and of all the things Objectivism is, could be and should be, sterile is not among them.

Winterwind, I find that I don't want to "ignore" anyone. I can just skip over some comments if I want to. But I still think this is a good feature, because it is up to each individual to ignore someone if they want to, or not to. No one is making the decision for me, and somehow I find it easier to tolerate something offensive ( which is rare) just knowing that I have the option to not tolerate it if I so choose.

as usual, you are right on all fronts. . and if any of
my postings -- in genuine interest for the site -- made
your temporary "ignore" list, I apologize. . my view is
that I want to see it all, and select for myself.

I can see how this might make some people pleased, it is nice to be able to filter your world, but in some cases, I can see it might just be a conversation limiter. But if it makes things less tense, go for it!

RE: "is this feature retroactive, or do past comments stand?"
When you "Ignore", all of the ignored member's content is hidden - past and present.

although it may eliminate a LOT of messaging back and forth about 'you're ignored by...' ... 'you're 'un-ignored by.....', the system does have some 'open-loop' aspects, like invisible feedback to the people Being Ignored, and that, just by itself is not generally an improvement to 'communication.'

Unless you don't care OR that was intentional...
But you know me... always asking silly questions and making silly observations...

silly? . nope; astute! . I bet that it will be used, but
those against whom it's used will be "none the wiser"
since they'll see nothing except a lack of awareness
on the part of some folks. . if they can see that at all. -- j

by whom and to what end?

oh, I bet that someone will get pissed and turn it on
to block an offensive commenter -- might not last
long, but it will be used. . at one time, khalling assured
Scott or someone that any feature which is added
will indeed be used ... at that time, I believe that it
was about the meeting in the northeast. . I wonder
if the past re-appears when ignore is turned off. -- j

J, I was alluding to what the Gulch's Powers That Be might 'use the information for,' not how the users might block annoying 'posters.'..... :)

okay;;; I was taking you optimistically, since I see
the NSA as the real spooks and the gulch admins
as friends. . but we really need to think that each
word is being visited by both. . I sent a memo to
gulch admin the other day which may have brought
about the "ignore" feature, though it had to have
been waiting in the wings to arrive that fast. -- j
