ISIS and Their form of Islam
What is the attraction?

Since 9/11 we have had wars, Oversees Contingency plans, fancy names for the same things. War.
Since 9/11 we have had 3 Presidential Cycles, arguments of every aspect of everything, more divisiveness in the past 6 years than ever before. We are engaged with an enemy ISIS, Islam, Muslims or whatever you want to label them, them being those we are at war with.
I have read the Bible several times. Studied the Bible, Read the Koran (Qur'an), watched as our society has degraded, seen our constitution usurped and ignored. Seen Homosexuality go from something in the closet to almost the "cool thing to do." Watched television programming go from wholesome positive to slutty almost porn on every channel. Seen Christianity cave in to accommodate what the "masses" want, Politicians on a daily basis redefine the term crooked, making the corrupt politician of the 1940's look like a Saint today.
So I have begun to ask myself, with this version of Islam ISIS is practicing being such a violent, form, whereby they appear to be almost animals with their actions, why is it that so many intelligent, educated people are becoming followers. But not just followers, fervent, dogmatic fanatics?
I have a theory on this which came to me a few days ago while I was talking to some friends about why my nieces and nephews want to come to my house all the time, even though I am strict and they do not get away with anything. These kids get one warning period. Then if they act out they are immediately punished and they know better than to even ask why they did not get a warning. They know because if you ask them they will tell you because we were warned already. Even if that warning was two years ago.
My theory is consistency. Pure unadulterated consistency. I am coming to believe that people want, need and really demand consistency in the rules they are expected to follow and adhere to. Islam as horrid as any reasonable person may think it is, provides that consistency.
The Code of Hammurabi is an example of consistency and punishment. There is little to no ambiguity regarding the law and punishment. Hammurabi only had about 300 laws, all categorized, all very clear and easy to understand. the punishments are also easy and clear to understand. Death on many, many violations.
Now I am not arguing right or wrong good or bad only trying to analyze what the attraction is.
"One of the major obstacles to achieving these goals is inconsistency, which will confuse any child, regardless of developmental age"(Effective dicipline for childrem, 2004)
This consistency we crave as children and need as adults. Our Government has failed in this with activist Judges, and Lobbyists, that water down every aspect of consistency in our lives. What is right for Joe is wrong for Wanda, criminals who commit the most heinous of crimes get lot off with barely a slap on the wrist, while another person who commits a minor infraction is sentenced to 20 years.
This form of Islam being practiced by ISIS provides a very obvious form of consistency. Those who do not believe, Death. Homosexuals, Death. Steal and if you're lucky you might lose a hand, but Death. This form of ISLAM is providing a very binary way of life for people and because there is little to no ambiguity in anything they do, those who want consistency are attracted to it.
I have also come to believe, based on observation, that people in General regardless of what they say, like a binary approach to life. Yes, No, Black, White, Legal Not legal, Moral Immoral, Right Wrong. When people get into shades of Grey the mind gets confused, especially when those shades of grey are different shades depending on your point of view and perspective.
Speeding is very binary. 55mph. More = Ticket. but does it really? Cops bend this in general, and don't bother people usually until they get to 66mph. Why> shades of grey. Mechanical errors between devices, so people push the 55pmh to 64, then complain when they get a ticket for 61. Why complain the limit is 55. But that is not how it works. Because of the inconsistency people assume a 9 - 10 mph buffer and push the limit.
With what ISIS is offering there is no buffer. You are speeding or not, PERIOD. You are following the tenets or not, and if not the punishment is clear and swift. There is no waiting for 5 years and dozens of appeals, sentence is carried out immediately and violently.
Could this consistency be the real attraction? Has our Society pushed people into complete frustration by changing the rules of the game so often people cannot keep up?

"why is it that so many intelligent, educated people are becoming followers."
I wonder if how man intelligent people who are not coerced in some way join ISIS. I suspect there's a tiny fraction of humankind that's mentally ill and/or evil, and they are attracted to whoever is perpetrating extreme evil in the world.

I agree with the points about arbitrary enforcement of laws being a problem, but my suspicion is evil death cults would crop up from time to time regardless of this problem.
