Obama and Moore's objectives aside-like they are brilliant anyway-
Capitalism is not about trade embargoes. ITS BEEN 60YEARS and the cubans have suffered miserably.

"The essence of capitalism’s foreign policy is free trade—i.e., the abolition of trade barriers, of protective tariffs, of special privileges—the opening of the world’s trade routes to free international exchange and competition among the private citizens of all countries dealing directly with one another. During the nineteenth century, it was free trade that liberated the world, undercutting and wrecking the remnants of feudalism and the statist tyranny of absolute monarchies." Rand is not completely consistent on this point.

"I would advocate that which the Soviet Union fears above all else: economic boycott. I would advocate a blockade of Cuba and an economic boycott of Soviet Russia; and you would see both those regimes collapse without the loss of a single American life."

      Playboy Interview: Ayn Rand
      Playboy, March 1964

IMHO unless we are going to impose a naval blockade, then we should open up trade. I think the contact with Americans and particularly with Cubans who escaped to the US would have a strong coercive effect on the repressive regime in Cuba. Although getting our own house in order would be even more important.

Sit down son. CTUI was published in '67. The Playboy article was in '64. She obviously rethought her position

Ruh, roh.. a family squabble... :)

I think we could have it both ways. The Castros are on their way out. The sanctions have real teeth now that Russia and Venezuela have stopped propping them up. Fidel is out of the picture (88 years old) and Raul is 83 years old... I suspect it wouldn't be much longer for the timing to be right.

Instead of waiting just a bit longer, our POTUS has sucked up and sided with another communist regime. The policy change is truly not that big of a deal for us. It does however show us once again where O's sympathies are.

We can only hope this turns out well. I don't see it as much of a threat to us. What happens for the Cuban people remains to be seen.

I truly wish them well and hope more open trade strikes a blow for capitalism and freedom for them. It is past time for them to rise up and take charge.

          Respectfully
          O.A.

This just as the Castro's are on the verge of death. Another 10 yrs, and they would be gone and the stranglehold on Cuban gov't would be in flux. Now, the influx of hard currency is sure to cement communism for a long time.
