What of Eric Garner

Now we have more demonstrations and in this case the angst seems more understandable. We all saw the video. In this case it seems the grand jury got it wrong, or at the very least there was an injustice done. Excessive force appears to have been used. The law that brought the police in in the first place is ridiculous. He was selling individual cigarettes on a sidewalk. The government was just upset because they weren't getting their exorbitant taxes.

The man did have a record, was resisting arrest, but was not armed and did not assault the police. He was greatly outnumbered by the police and while subdued claimed he could not breathe, yet the police did not get off of him. How long does it take to cuff a man while down? Additionally, it took far too long for EMT to arrive and Mr. Garner died.

All in all I think the police should have more important things to do and this particular law which is only a misdemeanor should at most be a ticket-able offense. One should not face arrest. Ultimately this law should be repealed. Men should not die for such a minor offense.

Am I wrong?

Agreed this was odd. We don't know the details of the grand jury but the cop should have let go when he said he couldn't breathe and was in obvious physical distress. I don't like though that this is being labeled as racism. Just because the two happened to be different colors doesn't automatically mean the cop was being racist. This could have happened to anybody, and it has. This is not the first time something similar has happened.

      Hello Snoogoo,
Indeed. There seems no reason to attribute this in any way to racism. Unfortunately their are so many that will. "Boo-hoo the world is tough and white privilege is why. They all have it so easy and they are ALL holding the rest of us down... " Bull. Individual behavior and initiative are what determines your fate. One can overcome tremendous adversity. Look who is our POTUS and AG, just to mention a couple.
      Regards,
      O.A.

Those undergoing arrest always complain about the process. If he was able to say 11 times "I can't breathe," obviously he was breathing. This is a tragedy, no doubt, but not a crime.

Evidently, this is a "broken window" law created locally to reduce black market activity that was hurting legal businesses. In fact, it was a local business that called the police about Mr. Garner in the first place.

Of course, none of that will matter to the race activists.

We, in Milwaukee, are still awaiting word on our own white police officer killing of a black man. If you're interested you can search on Dontre Hamilton killing in Milwaukee. It appears that the coward DA is waiting for it to get cold/snowy to stave off riots. My feeling is that this is merely going to continue to fester until next summer when we will have wide spread race riots. Just my opinion.
