Customers right to know of unfair treatment?

Do the US labeling requirements constitute an unfair trade policy? On the one hand, consumers can't make decisions about what to purchase without information. Does the mandatory labeling (and the underlying tracking that would have to take place) place an undue burden on businesses? Your thoughts?

Canada and Mexico have to stop any latent "Buy American" impulses at any cost.

It is not unfair, they can require our producers to do the same on our export products. It all comes down to they are afraid to lose market share (money) if Americans buy American meats in preference to theirs because of that label.

Really, what is amounts to is a technology barrier. Most food producers in the US (I work in the food service industry) are being pushed by all their downstream customers (like supermarkets, up-scale restaurants, etc.) to label based on origin and conditions. This is so that people can verify that their organic produce is actually organic and their free-range beef is exactly that. The catch to these producers is that these efforts require an investment in infrastructure and overhead via technology, and it imposes extra costs as a result. When you factor in the shipping costs, these costs then put them at a strategic disadvantage in the market.
