Charles Barkley will most likely be denounced this week as an Uncle Tom by those who are dependent on keeping the black community under their thumb. Sadly so.

I have heard this from a person who grew up poor and was of Swedish (not African American) descent. She said they like the notion of not being poor, but when someone starts being successful at something they'll say you're highfalutin. I'm from an upper-middleclass background and have never heard that word used without irony. .

I suspect what he's saying is true, but it's not just about dark skinned people. It happens among any group of people who are poor. Something similar probably happens with a group of drug/alcohol addicts, and one of them tries to quit. Same thing if it's a group of out-of-shape people, and one starts dieting and exercise.

Rational people are happy for other people's successes. This is cult like behavior.

The flaw there is the underlying assumption of rational people.

Now especially, emotion trumps reason or rationality more often than not. Thank you public schools.

In MA they have "feelings teachers" in some schools. Something that struck me when I learned of it as being nearly as bizarre as Neuticles.
