ASVAB surprise

Today I was informed that my daughter, who is a senior in high school, is to take the ASVAB, military vocational assessment test, this Thursday. Wondering why a test taken en route to entering the military was being given to high school children I called the school. I learned that the test was given to all seniors and that it was possible to opt out, provided I filled out and signed a form. I asked how a voluntary test to join the military could be made mandatory and was told that it wasn't, I could opt out. I explained that having to fill out a form OR my daughter would be taking the test hardly registered as something non-mandatory.

I drove to the school, filled out their form. My daughter won't be taking the test.

Further, I learned that my daughters would have been entered into a national database without my opting out.

As a veteran who has taken the test (and rated pretty high, I might add) I shudder to think that anyone in gOvernment could be looking at high schoolers and salivating over a child's perceived vocational aptitude could be used to the benefit of the country (military or otherwise).

At this point in time, despite a family history of service to this country,I wouldn't recommend military service in the US to anyone, for any reason. These **ckers need to be taken down a peg or two.

Update. I read the opt out form today when i signed it - my daughter will not be taking the test - it will not give the info ro the military for recruitment purposes. It will give readily give the information along with school picture, address, grades to any entity who requests it. Naturally I put the kibosh on all of that with one pen stroke and a stern comment to the school.

Another Update: about 3 hours after I opted out my daughter received a phone call from the US Marines. I told them she had no interest. I also explained that I was an honorably discharged veteran and would not recommend my kids into military service at this time if it meant my death. The reason? I do not trust this Oministration, its judgment, or its fidelity ot the Constitution. My children lives are worth more.

He thanked me and hung up.

Hmmm. Interesting. My daughter is getting ready to take it as well. Unfortunately, the Establishment have firm control on post high-school options: 1) Minimum wage job (if you can get one, the competition includes college grads with huge student loan debt) 2) College (student loans!! Arrgggh!!) 3) Military.

In this horrible day & age of liberal insanity, I don't like ANY of the options for today's youth. Any other choice I'm missing?

My niece just graduated. She wants to pay for college as she goes. She has an interest in someday running a B & B. So she went to the nicest one in town, asked for an internship and was hired on the spot. She will cross train in all the areas including cooking and eventually help manage. Often entreprenuers are so busy they put off hiring. Working for a start up usually means you csn move up quickly because the company changes quickly -even if you come in as a receptionist. Taking night classes at the local community college can get the basics out of the way. Cg has a point. Most larger companies offer tuition reimbursement. It 's how db paid for law school.

      "Any other choice I'm missing?"
IMHO the Establishment doesn't control hardly anything. Don't believe "here are you're three options." A mass of people serving one another for money is a system beyond control of one entity.

I believe in avoiding "career tracks" or anything that sounds like a single entity controlling the process of living your own life and serving others for money.

In technology you can often get companies to pay for classes one or two classes at a time, so you get OJT and no loans.

The only choice is to serve others with alacrity for money. Get to know people who are honest, hard-working, and keen to help people for money. If along the way you find a way to bring a service or product to people who previously couldn't afford it, figure it out, get to it, etc, you'll probably get rich. If you work hard, operate honestly, invest wisely and conservatively, you'll have an affluent lifestyle hard to imagine in any other time and place.

That's all my humble opinion. Also, it hasn't made me rich yet; people's mileage may vary.

On your last point, I agree with you. On the issue as a whole, there are so many other things that fall into this same category of "default setting=good for me, bad for you", but oh don't worry...because you have the freedom to override the default setting (provided we remember to tell you about it, or maybe if you already happen to know your rights). The default setting on all sorts of matters (Privacy Policies to name one) treat people like cattle, which is exactly how they view you.
