    I agree with your frustration about naming conventions of time periods. I think also the naming convention used for fossils causes real barriers in education about evolution. Fossil discoveries are regularly praised as a "new species", which is great hype (it is what the media want to embrace). Its name is then assigned, separating it even further. The problem is the inherent implication that any lineage of generations can spontaneously change into another species. Since the beginning of time every offspring has been the same species as its parents. In fact the concept of "different species" can only apply to contemporary populations, and not when looking backwards into past time.
