Mrs. Jellyby opines about Public Education

I found a new faux heroine: Mrs. Jellyby. The character from Charles Dickens is so pre-occupied by wanting to fulfill her own preconception about helping others that she not only neglects her own family in the process, but doesn't actually accomplish anything to help in the first place! Just like liberals/progressives! They don't care about results, they just want to LOOK like they are getting something done.

If you follow the link the NYT letter, it contains that line about people being torn between sending their kids to the schools we'd like or "supporting" the public schools by sending our kids there. I hear this all the time. People accept free schools as if taking the free education is some kind of good deed they're doing for society.
