Hard to believe the game of football was almost stopped by Progressives. Interesting history of the game and how Progressives think.

lol! that's a good one. when someone starts to bicker with my husband and he wants to be left alone, he asks, "yes, but what about the Scandinavian tax code?" I don't know where he came up with something that bizarre, but people's reactions to the question are pretty funny. they usually get so confused, they just shut up. one time someone just said, "I don't know!" and stomped off. perfect!

Oh, I feel old! Lol! (I was in mid 7th grade then).
That's really cool that your dad was a goalie. I can understand why that jersey would hold such meaning for him. My husband played goalie for a few years in high school/college. That to me has to be the most nerve wracking position in any sport going.

nope, didn't see them live. I wasn't born yet :) I just remember seeing the movie over a decade ago and being mesmerized. I couldn't believe that had happened. my dad has been a goalie since he learned to skate and when we obtained that jersey, he was awestruck. its definitely special to us.

I can't stand when people do that. It as if they are trying to prove that they somehow are capable. What enda up happening is the opposite of the desired effect; the shortcomings are now under the glare of a spotlight, showing in high relief every flaw. They have had a great formula working there, as has been proven over and again. You don't mess with perfection!

We like our brutal games because we are natural humans. It has nothing to do with creating distractions. Porn and mind-altering drugs would be just as effective...

    OH MY GAWD!
    That belongs in the Smithsonian!

Jim Craig... "carraig" in Gaelic means "rock" btw, which I thought appropriate for the goalie.

I was grabbing this link to add to a previous post and I'm wiping tears: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qYscemhnf...

Jim Craig was a hero of mine for a long time. Nothing changed, except the memory of those days and the 1980s became too painful to dwell on.

Dancing passes the time. Going to the opera passes the time, arguing politics on a message board passes the time. Pretty much anything that can be defined as "entertainment" passes the time. And Man *is* a tribal animal. It'd be foolish to try getting him to act contrary to his nature.

I was going to argue against "it gets more intense when the real world is falling apart at the seams", but then I decided to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume (there we go again...) you meant it becomes more relevant, more important, rather than more intense.

Sports can be very important to a society; sports can help restore a society that's falling apart. Sports can give a society that's falling apart hope; and as Napoleon said, the moral is to the physical as 3 to 1.

The year is 1980. The United States is suffering from malaise, the economy is in the toilet, the great enemies are expanding, we're no longer certain of our exceptionalism or righteousness, we're being told that the world is going to end in either ice or overpopulation, that we need to be content with less, that sacrifices have to be made...

And then a handful of nobodies from nowhere, USA defeat the greatest *professional* athletes at hockey in the world. Literally, it didn't really mean anything. Metaphorically, it meant that the American character wasn't dead, wasn't wrong, wasn't a myth. By itself, it didn't change anything. But, what it did do was set us up for when Ronald Reagan came along and made it clear that we weren't over.

I view the 1980 Olympic hockey team victory as the beginning of the 1980s renaissance.

I feel like stirring the pot. All you sports fans can check this out and tell me what you think. Don't hate me for not being a sports fan; just isn't my thing. I do not agree with this guy on all his philosophy, but he makes a valid point about sports, among some other things.

I'm sure I'll get an earful, but whatever.

bollacks! what a spinner this guy is! tale as old as time-sports games with stakes. yea, it's tribal. it passes the time. it gets more intense when the real world is falling apart at the seams. it is distraction. arenas are some of the most ancient sites from around the world-throughout all cultures! this ain't new. children mimic adults-not the other way around.

I think Parcells was the coach. His problem with him was he never took chances. Sometimes you have to put the ball up and let your guy make a play. Neil played it too safe.

Please post Minnie. It seems more like arrogance on the part of the NHL. I don't think they want to admit there style is inferior.

Art Rooney may be a problem. Word is that with Dan being ambassador that his son Art is taking his place. He appears to be more hands on and is making decisions best left to others.
