During those 21 years, I found I'd rather work around murderers than thieves as long as none were cop killers who belong in one man cells in a segregation unit.

Still not a place you'd like to be in for any length of time. I sat down on a piano bench where a young man was playing beautifully and asked what he was in for. He responded 'murder' . He had taught himself to play the piano by ear.

One one occasion I was stopped at the Gate and told I couldn't enter for a little while but everyone else got to enter. Then the an officer came out and told me my husband Lieutenant with the SO was inside and we couldn't both be in the prison at the same time. Duh!

I served on three different Grand Juries. Our County Sheriff had a perverted sense of humor. He decided if we were going to nominate people for candidacy in one of the six prisons in Brazoria County, we the Grand Jury should visit each of the six prisons. That was an experience!

Cracking jokes got me through 21 years of being a state corrections officer at a maximum security prison.
To say I was never scared there would be a big time lie. Bagged a state retirement, though.
