Looking for a book

There's a book I read many years ago about the lengths the left went to in the early 1900s (and maybe the late 1800s) to change public attitudes from American pride in self-sufficiency to the entitlement mindset we see today. 150 years ago, most Americans would have been insulted at the idea of receiving government aid (or even private aid, generally speaking), and these people knew that if they wanted to create a welfare state, they'd first have to change the public's outlook.

I can't track this book down. I don't remember the title or the author. Is there anyone here who is familiar with the book I'm talking about?

Thanks.

Yes, it's called the Communist Manifesto by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels.
