I for one, and many of you I bet, had great conversations with Herb Shapiro, (Herb7734)...I will miss him greatly.

Good Afternoon All!

Sorry for the repeat message, but several eMails bounced, so I had to log into my dad's computer to get the proper addresses.

It is with sadness that I notify you that my dad, Herb Shapiro passed peacefully away early this morning while sleeping.

This followed complications due to pneumonia in early June.

Regards,
Steve.

I am sorry to hear this. 2.5 years ago he said they thought he had dementia which would make him unable to think very shortly. His wife and he dug into the details and found it was a misdiagnosis. With treatment he recovered from the apparent dementia. It sounded like his wife figured it out when he was sick. I am glad he got more life and free commentary for us, but I always want more.

While I did not know Herb, I can tell from the comments that he was a well-liked and respected gentleman. Very sorry for your loss.

My Gram never let us cry at funerals, she said the loved one was gone, but forever in our hearts. So too is it with the words of wisdom Herb would post. So sad to lose someone so correct in thinking and lover of Big Band music. We could use more of it today. Condolences to his loved ones. I will play my deceased dad's band version of Harlem Nocturne in honor of Herb today.

A fun and wonderful song. But I don't think "enjoin" means what you think it means. It is lawyerese for "forbid."

The only time I wish for an afterlife is to meet the great ones face to face. Herb, you are one of those. Family, it will hurt for a time, leaving a big empty space. Fill that space with his memory as you make more of your own. Rest, Herb, well earned rest.

from one Steve to another, I am sorry for your loss but am impressed and envious of the connection you two had with Ayn Rand. My father past over 30 years ago, and he was a strong liberal but well read. When I was about 15 I saw he was reading Atlas Shrugged and as a high school student thrilled with Greek Myths, I picked it up, but of course found after several pages it was not what I thought, I dropped it for maybe 20 years but am a great fan today and wish I could or had, discuss the Gulch with my father. You will note my connection as my e mail is JOHNGALT2@VERIZON.NET

Rest in his Glory Forever Herb

    Epitaph
    By Merrit Malloy

    When I die
Give what’s left of me away
    To children
And old me that wait to die.

And if you need to cry,
    Cry for your brother
    Walking the street beside you.
    And when you need me,
    Put your arms
    Around anyone
    And give them
What you need to give to me.

I want to leave you something,
    Something better
    Than words
    Or sounds.

    Look for me
    In the people I’ve known
    Or loved,
And if you cannot give me away,
At least let me live on in your eyes
    And not your mind.

    You can love me most
    By letting
    Hands touch hands,
    By letting bodies touch bodies,
    And by letting go
    Of children
    That need to be free.

    Love doesn’t die,
    People do.
So, when all that’s left of me
    Is love,
    Give me away.

The world may seem emptier when a good man goes, but it is always richer because he was here. See you on the Far Side Herb.
