However, then I spend a summer in Florida and South Carolina, and my definition of friends and neighbors got a lot wider. Then, I moved to LA, and the circle got wider still. Now, with in-laws from Russia and India, just about everyone looks like family to me, and that will be true for my grandchildren, as well.

As a child, i saw German prisoner's of war who were interned in prisons in my county being driven in open trucks to the fields to work. They waved at me and I waved back. My mother admonished me and explained who they were. I answered her by saying, 'They all look like my daddy.' They were blond and blue eyed. I think racism happens when people look different from us. If aliens from space landed we'd probably not welcome them either. It's not right but it is a fact and one has to decide how they feel about strangers. We are more comfortable with those we identify with. Think about the Indians, Hispanics, and our black friends.
