The failing of democracy is that it ignores the rights of the individual in favor of the group. If the group is hijacked by a power that has evil intent, we have 1984 and big brother. The current demonrat party is part of such a hijacking. That, IMHO, is the root of the Patriots and Trump, they are the best hope for some form of respect for the individual. Democracy is an evil thing in and of itself. A republic at least allows the smallest group to have some way to choke the crap out of the the little turd who sold them out. Too long we have not choked such crap, we have shrugged and allowed it to continue, creating "the swamp".

Democracies also fail when small minority rights are allowed to overrule large majority rights.

There you go, Thor. You nailed it, and it is really the root of the problem. Government (and elites) think the people are the sheep to support them. I see that as a very Ayn Rand thing to expose.

It was first told to me many years ago by a German octogenarian with a thick German accent who said it was an old German saying. He's gone now, but was a great guy to know. Don't know about Will Penny.

A good one. I was seven years old at the time. All I remember was:
    Goldwater! Goldwater!
    He's our man!
    Johnson belongs in the
    Garbage can!

I keep hoping that there are enough people from Galt's Gulch to retrieve what is left when the looters are done. I become less confident the more supposedly intelligent people I find who are subscribing to the altruist philosophy...and that we can have free everything. There is no free anything...it is all paid for by the few and the loss of all rights. The loss of all rights except those of the elitists. It is frightening.

12 at the time, also. I remember seeing him on television (B&W, of course), but at that age politics was boring so I didn't pay much attention. How's that old German saying go... "To soon old, too late smart."

Just like Ayn Rand, Reagan saw our current terrible threat of a complete socialist takeover coming.
Should Trump be reelected, I fully expect dirty tricks pulled.
The Marxist lust for power goal of conquest justifies any and all means.

    So correct.

Here we are. I doubt even 25% of the population would recognize the government is beholden to the people. There is so little evidence of this today.

Harry Reid represented Nevada. It might be right next door to Arizona, but it's a different state.

As I am fond of saying, "Democracy" is a dirty word, 50.1% of the mob ruling the 49.9% sane ones. Nope. Democratic rule is tyranny of the masses....

What I find interesting...not once do I remember seeing "Democracy" in the US Constitution.

Agreed. Phoenix was infiltrated with retirees from Dem. strongholds of Detroit, Chicago, and transplants from Southern CA. The Arizona Republic daily newspaper turned left about 1990, iirc.

The Westerner's I experienced were in west Tx..same thing as yours. The others are retirement transplants...literally transplanting the "culture" of dependency.

The saddest thing; When we bleed or breed we find ourselves universally connected...a biological "Absolute".

I lived in Phoenix several times (1983, 1990-1991, 1999-2002) and the degradation of the political views from sane responsible self-reliant westerners to the irrational mommy-state leftist was sickening.

After crossing the Mn, Wis border night before last, the timbre of dialog and action changed.
I crossed from an environ of fear to that of outrage at the present clime. I heard facsimile of what Goldwater and Reagan bespoke decades past.
I have confidence that the smaller communities of the overwhelming land mass will prevail, if not immediately, over the long term. The majority of the population may occupy 1 to 2% of the landmass. If this majority pushes too hard....they can be starved into objective reality...literally.
