I began reading Ayn Rand when I was 10 years old, all of her books handed down to me from my father. Took me until I was 21 to actually read Atlas Shrugged, as it's a little daunting in size and truthfully I'm glad I waited. I'm not sure I would have caught most of the point if I had read it earlier.
I know this is just the introduction page but I have got to get some suggestions! I am young and a newlywed and want to know how it is possible for those in my similar financial position to "shrug." I am not in a place to liquidate any assetts and live off of the proceeds. What are some small things I can do, or am I forced to just feed the system until I can truly shrug it all off??

bigjim mentioned your post to me so i thought I would reply.

I live at Galt's Gulch (I really do). Have been an Objectivist since 1971 (40 of my 60 years). Over those 40 years, I have read most everything Ayn Rand wrote. My home is in a very remote area of southern Arizona where I moved when I decided to strike in 2003.

I was asked if my decision to strike was based on one event or the accumulation of events over time. I replied:

"It was the accumulation over decades. I have worked hard since i was 14. My last gig was management for a very large semiconductor firm that I joined when no one had heard of them.

By 2003, I knew the time had come to strike and I had worked to have the ability to do so. I see lots of folks on here (mostly younger than I) asking "when is the right time to strike?"

The answer is, "you will know when it is time"."

I swear - by my life and my love of it - that I will never live for the sake of another man, nor ask another man to live for mine. - Ayn Rand (Atlas Shrugged)

Welcome. Great questions, Ruger. I don't know your skillsets, but google list of most economically free countries. that's an eye-opener. Australia is looking for young people, and actively recruiting due to decreases in population. on a smaller scale, consider looking to relocate to a state that has no state income tax. Without children and infrastructure yet, it's easy for you to to go build a life elsewhere.

Welcome to The Gulch, Ruger1410. Glad to have you here. I'm sure you'll get some helpful suggestions from our residents here.

You could also make those questions into a post. I'm sure it would receive many a response.
Click the blue "Submit Post" button in the upper right corner of your screen and you'll go to the "Submit Post" page. Fill in a short descriptive title in the "Title" field. Leave the "URL" field blank. (It's optional) Then enter your questions into the "Note" field. Then choose a proper category (possibly Culture or Philosophy) and click "Submit Post."
