Liberty and Simple Pleasures.

Tonight, Joan and I went to T-Joes, a Wyoming saloon located outside the Cheyenne city limits.

"Saloon" is a type of business designation in Wyoming.
A saloon can not be established in city limits, but can be outside of them within the county area.

At a saloon, patrons who sit in the bar area can
a) drink alcohol
b) eat food from the kitchen
c) smoke... that's right, *smoke*.

Today was my birthday.
For my birthday dinner I had a marinated rib-eye, two fingers of Maker's Mark neat, and an Ashton Heritage.

This would never have happened legally in Connecticut without special dispensation (cigar event held when restaurant was normally closed).

It is easy to forget the little liberties which have already been lost.
It was nice to have the simple pleasure of one of them back.

Happy B-day and I'm so glad to hear you are enjoying Wyoming. I'll acknowledge that Wyoming has some liberties not found in CT (I have two friends from CT who come out hunting each year and stay at my place) like carrying concealed or open with no permit needed and am aware of the distinctions. I've been in Wyoming over half my life (36 years vs my first 35 in Southern California). Wyoming had an opportunity yesterday to choose a different, less-government direction, and didn't do it. Current Gov Matt Mead (one of the long time controlling families) beat Taylor Haynes in the GOP primary. Good Ol' Boy politics played a part in that process and I guess I'll just have to hunker down and make the best of it until they plant me and I start pushing up daisies...

A Coworker and I sat in an large open patio in a restaurant in Manhattan Beach. The only patrons that afternoon. We lit up 2 cigars and then a middle aged couple came to the restaurant and amazingly took the table right next to us. They complained about the cigars to the manager and we had to leave. That was 20 years ago. So it is in the People's Republic Of California.

When I first started here we used to have those chrome ashtray stands (the ones where you pushed a button and they "cleaned" themselves) in all the offices, cafeterias, and waiting areas. They all vanished years ago, but I understand they're collectors items. Most of us had those "beanbag" ashtrays, either in our vehicles or on the corner of our desks... fought like hell as they eroded our rights on this.

Bit of California Trivia - There are *almost* no exceptions to the "no smoking within a state office building or within 20 feet of a doorway" rule... however... when Schwarzenegger was elected, he had a separate "lounge" built on the roof of the state capitol (that was in compliance with this rule) that was a "designated smoking area"...

I wonder what Moonbeam had done with this cool bit of "California Gold"...

Happy Birthday Euda. I glad you had a great time and are loving it here in the west.

Here the only smoking in an eating establishment is in an Indian bar.

    Happy birthday!
Although I would not have stayed in your vicinity had I been at the saloon (cigar smoke makes me nauseous) I am happy that you are enjoying freedom.

Happy Birthday! After reading this page, I went to get a coffee refill. On the way back it popped into my head something that I learned from watching TV a few months back. The original operations desks at Cape Canaveral mission control came with ash trays built into their left side counter tops! Believe the one I saw was in a museum. An ash tray did not come with the last two cars I bought.

Happy Birthday Eud. Are you sure you had a good time? Was the meal sanctioned as "healthy" by Michelle? Was anyone offended by your cigar smoke? Wouldn't it have been better if you filled out numerous permits and got permission...okay I'll stop now. Sounds like you made a good choice to move.

Well, it was outside Cheyenne, mid August, and
I just hit town, me and the band,
Thought we'd stop and have ourselves a brew
In an old saloon, stogie in his hand
another year older, and feeling grand
was Eudaimonia... what could we do?

Well I knew the guy was the man of words
more common sense then the other herds
Objectivist? Yeah, and a man of honor, too...
He was smart, and tough, and good with a fable
so I drained my suds, and went up to his table
    and said...
    Hey there, Eu
    Happy Birthday To You!
Now, Here's mud in your eye!

Happy Birthday! I agree with you. Not only are we so restricted nowadays but we are also under constant video surveillance.

Happy Birthday! It's the lost little pleasures that we so intently miss and seldom get to enjoy.
