I have always had the idea that people value what is free or obtasined without working for it as having less value than what was worked for.
I guess that idea was either mistaken 50 years ago or has over the last half century become old fashioned and obsolete.
The real issue here is the expectations created by this approach. The people given this will be of the mind set that everyting is due them without effort and hard work. They should try running a business on that approach or achieving anything worthwhile.
I would not want to go to a surgeon who got his tringing by sitting on his butt ans watching someone else do it and never actually doing it themselves. Imagine Dr. Carson attempting to do that or better yet imagine him having a student who thought that way. IHis (carson's) reaction would be worth watching..

Worked for a number of years in gubmint in the welfare office. Very seldom was the "free stuff" appreciated, usually expressed as "not enough" by recipients.
Free is worth what it costs...zip. Usually.

Fortunately, I didn't have to learn to pronounce it. My son graduated 'summa cum laude'! Three years in the U. S. Army (Armored Division) paid for his college. Dumb kid from Texas.

The wife and I had this very conversation after the recent Democrat debate. We feel just like Mike does.

I tried to translate the phrase “Socialism Sucks” to put on a baseball cap, but I could not find a Latin word for Socialism. So, I ended up with “Socialism Exugo” which basically means Socialism sucks like a mosquito sucks blood. No one has ever asked me what it means, just like my Galt’s Gulch Twentieth Century Motor Corporation hat. I actually made a couple of caps with the true name Twentieth Century Motor Company.

    Funny.

But he should be able to pronounce "Magna cum Laude" properly.

    For all his education.

Wait...Halley's Comet used to be pronounced with a strong "A", but no longer. Back when Mike graduated college, that's probably the way they pronounced it.

After all...Jimmy Carter used to talk all the time about the "nuecular" arms race and nobody corrected him.

My favorite retort to people who think Southerners are stupid, is to point out that Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is located near Knoxville, TN. Yes, there are scientists and engineers from all over the country (and the world) who work there, but these people live there too. ORNL is the site of the fastest, most powerful supercomputers on Earth, which are used in a wide variety of areas of research, including artificial intelligence (AI) weather forecasting, nuclear modeling (fission and fusion), and many other areas. True, the percentage of Southerners who work at ORNL is a tiny fraction of the total population of the South, but the culture at Oak Ridge is heavily "southern". I'm a nuclear engineer, and when I was between my senior year and graduate school, I had a summer research internship there. Before then, I enjoyed target shooting and deer hunting (got my first Columbia Blacktail buck when I was 14), but the first time I ever fired a shotgun was when a couple of other engineers I was working with at the lab took me out to the Smokey Mountain Skeet and Trap Club. The shooting sports are enjoyed by some people whose IQs are integer multiples of people like Chuck Schumer and Diane Feinstein (who hate guns). By the way, I'm reminded (by radio talk show host Mark Levin) of dueling banjo music every time I hear Levin talk about Joe Scarborough (Levin refers to the Morning Schmoe as "banjo boy").
