AOC ramps up rhetoric on wages, says we cannot continue to allow people to be paid 'less than they need'

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., indicated on Monday that she will push for workers to get paid as much as "they need," without specifying what the amount would be.
“What we are fighting against -- what we are fighting against is a logic that says it is ok to pay someone less than they need to live, and we are here to say no more," she said during an event promoting her "Green New Deal."

Produce according to ability, receive according to need.

Seems like we've heard this line before. Let me see...Perhaps Karl Marx. Wonder what Ms Rand would say to AOC.

How about WE, THE PEOPLE stop paying people more than they are worth?

CUT the pay of politicians, judges, bureaucrats and other deadwood union holdovers that can't be fired by 97%

        You were going to ask?

'congress' passed a law that gave them the power to raise their own salaries.
The caveat was it didn't take effect until after the next election.

And signed into Law by a 'president' that....

A: had legislation they wanted passed.
B: Grateful for the support of the 'legislators' that helped them get elected.

It would make a very nice SCOTUS dilemma.

With the re-election rates, the case could very easily made they gave themselves a raise under the guise of NOT giving themselves a raise.

Would the issue be valid or not?

Could they justify the current level considering they HAVE NOT PERFORMED TO CONSTITUTIONAL REQUIREMENTS since the last time the budget was Balanced.

I predict that next year at this time we won't be hearing from Ms AOC! She will run out of fuel. She hasn't been on this earth long enough to have the slightest idea about what she is attempting to say. I will repeat what was said before, 'Hey girl, shut your mouth and listen.'

Well, I wonder where we have heard this garbage before. Does she think that she is being brilliant and original. That being said, maybe she is on to something. A family of four in this country can be given over $40,000 a year in welfare benefits if they milk the welfare system for every penny. Now, do they "need" that amount of money, I think not. Let's cut it at least in half and save the American tax payer a ton of money. Thank you AOC.

I'm not sure she has ever had a "brilliant and original" thought. Not trying to be patronizing but she just doen't seem to have the intellectual capacity to do that. Her main political advisor (silicon valley multi-millionaire) appears to have the capcacity. Maybe that's where she's getting this crap.

Yes, and it is not a mistake. She is a Justice Democrat, which is a revisionist Marxism. She will stop short of traditional Marxism only to avoid the phrase "cease the means of production". But if the Justice Democrats meet with any success, watch for the words "collective ownership" to become part of public discourse. Not good.

I think that as wages rise, automation will be more economical by comparison, and we can get RID of entitled american workers and stop buying so much from china. Why not make the minimum wage $20 an hour? That will eliminate a LOT of jobs and replace them by automation.

Start with fast food restaurants- use kiosks for ordering. I would go for that right now. The kiosks will be certainly more user friendly without having to deal with stupid people that cant seem to even listen to the simple orders from customers. I wont order from my phone remotely because I just dont trust that my order will be right.

And who decides how much they "need?". Maybe I "need" aFrank Lloyd Wright House, think I'd get it? She just gets crazier and crazier.
When high school teachers told our daughter, about to graduate, that they all deserved $100,000 per year, I told hre that is not how it works, as she had no experience and was sararting college. I told her she had to prove what she could offer and how she could make a company better.Working their way up to what they want to earn is something teachers never share with them, just that they are the best - at what?

It is amazing the level of vapidity of these so-called learned individuals, the teachers. The high sense of entitlement is mind bending. On top of that, they get summers off, winter and spring break, plus the invisible paycheck in terms of a solid-gold pension. What's worse are the administrators -- paper pushers and compliance officers that make even more than the teachers and have their own new buildings on the govt school campus. They are a cancer, if you ask me.

This fit right in line what AOC is verbalizing.I'm sure she has no clue to what she is saying. She never has read "Atlas Shrugged'.

Crazio has no clue and also no self-awareness. She is a wide-eyed vapid little sock puppet all the more happy to present what is handed her in terms of a script. Her mind would not be capable of comprehending the essential concepts of AS.

AOC only spouts what she's told by the Justice Democrats. Unfortunately, even after her dissatisfied constituents kick her out of office, the media will find a talk show slot for her, just to piss off conservatives. Don't expect the DNC to protect her, now that she's begun attacking establishment Democrats like Joe Biden.

this popular millennial leader is masquerading as a sheep dog for the sheeple that are listening to her. I am wondering if HRC hasn't been filling her clay with the lessons she has been taking back from AS.
I keep wondering when these individuals that won't get a real job will stop misleading others behind the grand scheme of "let's take, not earn"!

Fastest way to get robots is to increase the minimum wage. That will decrease employment for all workers who will get the minimum wage, and insure that the hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants have no work at all and stay on welfare. They are going to need directive 10-289 soon to keep unemployment levels down.

I predict there is a coming a tax on robots, like a minimum tax per hour of use to make workers competitive with them.

This AOC is a horribly pathetic dunce overflowing with conceit. What is with all this "We" business? Is AOC cutting checks out of her own account? No, this idiot of towering conceit insists on pointing a legislatively dictated gun at business owners and saying that they need to pay for her charity. A person of such arrogance and stupidity would surely explode if they were able to see who they are... AOC has no self-awareness.

I am for people earning what they need too. The way to do that is to find someone else's need and provide it in a mutual deal. A price floor (min wage higher than the market wage) won't work.

It's ironic that Rep Ocasio-Cortez condemned Former VP Biden for supposedly being tepid on the environment. By wrapping socialistic policies in a big green bow, she's undermining efforts to protect the environment.

Biden is right seek a middle ground. It's hard to quantify the costs of human activities that contribute to global warming. We know a large portion of global warming is caused by human activities, but we don't know exactly how much. We know global warming will be costly, but we don't know the price tag. Even if we knew, it's hard to quantify the future value costs borne today to mitigate it. So it is a complex problem with a middle ground. If we pick some reasonable number that represents the average cost of activities that contribute to the greenhouse effect, the problem will likely solve itself. If we tie proposed solution to socialism, we'll pay a double cost of socialism plus the cost of reducing greenhouse emission plus possible costs of the environmental efforts not working because they were created with an intrusive-gov't mindset.

Most progressives don't five a Rats Behind abut the environment. To them it is a way to gain more and more power over the lives of the people. So many people have been screwed over in the name of Protecting the Environment it is obscene

"To them it is a way to gain more and more power over the lives of the people."
Naomi Klein openly said in her book she used to be upset by the environment but then she realized it was one problem big enough to sell socialism. I stopped reading in the middle. I don't think she just "just kidding" in the second half.

In my entire career, I don't recall anyone considering my 'need'. I didn't expect anyone to do so and I wasn't disappointed. There was love and respect and I must admit my mother complained of my 'independence'. I never understood that.

I wonder how many people would think it was a good thing to learn that their boss wanted to fire them but the boss felt sorry for them knowing they needed the money.

Propaganda rubbish from the lying/looting UN choir. This is a site for rational discussion and objectivism, not politically motivated statist propaganda. Go to farcebook if you want to peddle such garbage.

Absolutely no evidence that any mitigation is needed other than what is normally done by individuals when weather patterns in an area (climate) change. Recall that there have been natural extreme local climate changes throughout the history of the Earth. E.g., sea levels have been several hundreds of feet less than they are today and more than a hundred feet higher than they are today. Glaciations have been coming at about 100,000 year intervals with the next one being somewhat late. If humans still exist then and the sea levels decrease 300+ feet, humans will build, as they did in the past, out on the new coast only to be flooded out by the next inter-glacial. No need to worry since humans have rational brains and do not usually stay put and die when conditions change. Besides the change in local climates is so slow only non thinkers would even find a problem with climate. Do not try to collectivize individuals because of changing weather patterns.

This is the reason I think the costs of global warming may be overstated. You can calculate it as if people won't move away from flooded areas, won't stop farming in areas that become arid, and won't start farming in formerly frozen areas that become arable. Humans have rational brains, and there are more of this working on problems like this. The problem of the earth supporting billions of people living affluent lives is complicated, but in just the past few decades there's bee reforestation and a decrease in greenhouse gas / GDP ratio. I think it's part of the Malthusian trap that we always seem to escape and I'm confident we will keep doing that.

I am all for people earning what they are willing to work for. Needs and wants are merely measuring sticks and goals, however, they do not justify in-and-of-themselves results. That is what so many people simply fail to comprehend. It is called a budget and learning not only what it is but how to use it is important to every human being. I really don't care what you want - unless you're willing to pay me in honest trade for it. Those who are willing to work for what they want are rarely disappointed.

And unless you are willing to come out with technologies and solutions which provide energy at a lower cost than I currently enjoy - don't talk to me about the nonsense called climate change. The solution isn't to hamstring the economy based on garbage science and ridiculous expenses with zero measurable results. We get enough of that out of our current government.

        ^^Yes.

I agree many people don't mind stealing from the future by damaging the environment, but most people are honest. The economy as we know it could never run if every citizen stole or trashed other people's stuff at the first moment they could get away with it. There's always an element of people who reject science and reason, but science actually gets things done, so I think it will prevail and the problems be solved faster than seems possible today.
