Oberlin College to pay five generation bakery $11M after it facilitated SJW mobs to devastate business
“Oberlin College in Ohio will have to pay a nearby bakery more than $11 million in damages because it libeled the store, tagging it as racist, and interfered with its business, a jury said on Friday.”
“The jury found the school and Oberlin's vice president and dean of students, Meredith Raimondo, guilty of libel after Raimondo allegedly helped pass out flyers claiming that the bakery was "racist" and had a history of "racial profiling and discrimination."
The jury also found that the college (not Raimondo) was guilty of intentional infliction of emotional distress for the owner, David Gibson, as well as libel and intentional infliction of emotional distress on his son.”

“What happened here is that Oberlin College and many universities have lost the understanding of their identity and basic purpose, and when that happens with most of us, when we don’t know who we are, we tend to do stupid things. That’s what happened here.
A few years ago, they had students saying they wanted finals cancelled because they were protesting minority men being shot by police in nearby Cleveland; in Dec. of 2015, the school’s black student union published 14 pages of racial accusations against the school with 58 demands to fix them; and the school had students thinking that the sushi in their cafeteria was “cultural appropriation” and unfit for eating because of that.
Instead of the school telling their students, “You are all crazy, and get back to studying,” they took on the “these poor snowflakes need our support” attitude.”
As it was, I had to over-compete to earn a spot in engineering. Despite going to a relatively poor school outside of Detroit, any black student coming from that school, got 0.5 added to their GPA based SOLELY on the color of their skin. If their parents put them in PRIVATE schools, they STILL got 0.5 added to their GPA. I had a NEAR PERFECT GPA, so I was getting in. But if there were enough minorities, I would have been squeezed out!
Now, I have no problem saying "If you went to THIS Class of school, then we will bump your GPA for qualification purposes"... But basing it on color ONLY, not the school, WHILE arguing it is about the schooling difference. It blew my mind. While I was there, it broke my heart to see what a train wreck they were producing.
It worked... Because WE KNOW people who turned down 90% scholarships at decent schools in MI, to go to MSU where they did not get but 10% financial aid, and a lot of LOANS. Because MSU was more the "Experience" they wanted from university!!!! (explain to me, the conversation an EDUCATED PARENT has with their child when they
say: "If you go here, you will owe NOTHING when you graduate with a SOLID degree... But if you go THERE, You will owe $100,000+ in student loans, and have basically the same degree..."
And do you think after that, the personal RESPONSIBILITY for such decisions will suddenly kick in? Not on your life!
Oberlin should be happy of this verdict. They can "help the plaintiffs repair any harm caused by the student protests" in reality instead of just pretending and talking about it.
Hopefully next week the judge will rule for treble damages and Oberlin will be able to help even more. Although it may mean a few less scholarships for students going for degress in womens' studies and gay pride.

“First, from the start of this case I have questioned the aggressive and demeaning attacks on the Gibsons as a defense strategy. There is no evidence that the Gibsons did anything wrong, unless you consider stopping people from stealing something wrong. That lawful act of protecting one’s property nonetheless has devastated a 5-generation business because of Oberlin College racial politics. Gibson’s Bakery survived two World Wars, the Depression, the turmoil of the 1960s, and the so-called Great Recession, but it may not survive Oberlin College’s social justice warriors and their faculty and administrative enablers. If the jury understands this, the other pieces of the case fall into line, factually and legally.
Second, I never cease to be amazed at the arrogance of the college community as reflected in the defense that Gibson’s Bakery was close to worthless. It’s the arrogance of the credentialed. A business that is in its 5th generation, and that currently supports three of those generations, is something of value. A business that employed almost a dozen local employees prior to this incident is something to value. Ultimately the jury will have to put a monetary value on the dramatic drop in business, and the loss of reputation of the individuals, but to demean the business the way was done is maddening.”

Any reason would do: looking at someone in the eye (which is a crime these days), expressing an opinion or belief that is not espoused by the left, of be in any way non-PC.
PC is an original tool b/c anything can be used to crack down on your opponent.

Sure. They are for "free speech" as long as it if "free" for them to libel others who don't conform.
Oberlin is a good example of campus violence gone amok.
