    I may be wrong (sure wouldn't be the first time), but I always thought that once the subpoena "recipient" was identified by the process server, the subpoena was considered to have been served even if it was refused.

    If I'm right, then she has been legally served and is now required by law to comply.

      Not only that but if the intended recipient knows that one is issued for than and tries to avoid it, they can be held in contempt for that act. At least in some jurisdictions.

      I believe you are correct. There is no such defense as "refusing" to accept the subpoena. You refuse on pain of contempt of court and can be tried in absentia and convicted of that - and promptly thrown in jail where you will then rot until you comply with the subpoena - by force if necessary.
