Everybody must have heard of these cases recently.

People become mysteriously ill and die.

Why would anyone in his/her right mind go there, knowing full well what's been happening?

My daughter went down there about 15 months ago. Had a great time no problems or issues at all. A close fring of mine has been down there every year for the past 15 years. No issues or problems.
Both now say they will never go back. They have seen pictures of the "resorts" they stayed at and both say they are almost unrecognizable. Huge amounts of neglect in standards very obvious.
Both wonder what happened and why.

Your daughter and your friend have common sense.
Reading about the latest deaths, me dino be asking meself, "Why are people still going there? Are they death wish crazy?
By now I'd be treating the Dominican Republic just like I do Mexico. I'd go no where near it!"
Thus so sayeth me dino quote above~~Let it be written. Let it not be done.

Hint: these are third world nations with all the hygiene and sanitation which come with them. If you're from such a nation, your body has built up an immune response and can probably handle it. If you're from a first world nation and your body is used to treating everything with antibiotics, its not hard for what to them would be a minor illness to become a major one.

If you are going to travel to a third world nation like this, you become 100% responsible for your personal hygiene because no one else is going to do it for you.

PS - it says they ate at a Japanese restaurant. What do you want to bet it was sushi?

I think there is a Japanese dish (I believe it is sushi)
in which raw fish is served. That might work in Japan, but trying it in the Dominican Republic would not be advisable at all (though I'm not a doctor or medical authority). Your Idea about someone from there having "built up an immune response" is interesting, and may be valid. But that doesn't make it a good idea for someone from outside to try it.

There are elements of truth in you statement.

The fact remains that hygiene was not better last year or the year before, but there was no sudden spike in deaths.

Also, the hygiene issue is relevant in other areas of third world countries and we don't see this strange happening.

Something must have changed in the DR and it may not have been accidental.

Whatever the case, the State Department has travel advisories on every nation in the world and includes hygiene and health factors which should be noted when travelling - including advisory shots, etc. I would advise anyone planning travel outside the US to check these advisories when making such plans.

Most people who travel to these countries are not even aware of what is happening there.

Not everyone is up to date on information.

I wonder what the Latin would be for "traveler beware"... caveat viator ?

Or "cave viatores" for travelers beware.

              Even that would not help.

You would not believe how ignorant people can be.

They go to the danger zone w/o ANY knowledge. You confront them and ask if they are aware of what they are exposed to? Then they look at you with those stupid eyes: "We didn't know..." 🤢

Have Dominican Republicans routinely been dying, or just foreigners? It does seem like some failure of health conditions. I know I wouldn't want to go there.

The death toll is now at 11:

    https://www.foxnews.com/world/kansas-...

"Dominican government officials have said that the deaths were coincidental and attributable to natural causes. "

Natural causes? So they decided to travel to the DR to die.

Is that it? They knew their time was approaching and even though they were completely healthy, they just dropped dead.

This reminds me a lot of the panic in San Bernadino hospital ER when everyone was sick due to a mysterious chemical substance that seeped from a cleaning agency and/or alien landing (actually just hysteria). Or the mysterious saiga antelope deaths in Siberia (actually due to Pasturella multocida).

I suspect that there is a real disease that accounts for a small number of these deaths, a co-inicidence of other normal problems and a lot of hysteria and press hype.

    It is very strange, indeed.

The fact that these incidents are happening suddenly without warning.

It looks like something intentionally inflicted, although I have absolutely no proof of it.
