Other than "white guilt" what does this accomplish. To the best of my knowledge we have spent 19 trillion on LBJ's War on Poverty and poverty still exits, All we have accomplished is creating generations dependent on government hand outs. Obviously the only thing reparations will accomplish is buying the black vote. Where is Galt's Gulch and when is the plane leaving?

I love the story about LA spending some 600 million on homeless benefits only to find that the number of homeless has increased. DUH !! The more they spend, the more people will choose homelessness to get the benefits.

Want to get rid of homelessness, get rid of the benefits

These socially altruistic looters are great at subsidizing the homeless while at the same time taxing the productive. And they are dumbfoundedly stunned that there is increased homelessness and reduced production.

One would think that they are either STUPID, or they want this result. Maybe they want everyone who is NOT in the elite to be homeless and completely dependent on the fools who actually go out and work and feed them. Definitely makes me want to go galt

I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but I got into a discussion about this on another board, and I just had to paste it in here, in increasing order of ridiculousness...

    1. What if a black person had slaves on one side of his family but not the other? Does he get half a reparation?

    2. If his wife’s family immigrated in the 20th century, do they get a quarter reparation?

    3. What if the man is a quarter AfAm and the wife is half and did descend from slaves? Ok, so now they get 5/16 reparation? If I as a white person had slave owners in half of my family who owned the man’s ancestors, is it now… I lose track… 5/32 reparations for the man and 1/16 for the wife… AUUGH!

    4. Ok, let’s try one more. Suppose I, as a white person, have one parent whose parents came from Europe in 1880 (thus are clean), but the other had some slave owners on his mother’s side, but the whites on his father’s side lived in the north, or didn’t own slaves, and perhaps there were mulattoes on his mother’s side, and some owned slaves and some didn’t (There were black slave owners and white slaves, people don't realize that)… so I would pay nothing on my father’s side, but maybe 31/64 on my mother’s… but of course it’s possible that her great-great-grandfather owned slaves but her great-great-grandmother didn’t marry him until after 1865, which makes it now 61/128, ok now I’m just making up these numbers, but you get the idea.

    Okay, I tell you what:

    [sarcasm mode="on" level="high"]
We'll give a black citizen reparations IF they can prove that they are directly descended from a slave, but it must be divided equally among all living descendants of said slave. But subtracted from the total amount will be the difference in living standards between that citizen's living standard and that which he would have had were his ancestors NOT brought over and was therefore born in socialist Zimbabwe and living on $1 per day.
While we're at it, let's just give our "stolen" Texas and California back to Mexico, on the condition that they turn around and give it back to Spain, and Spain give it back to the Aztecs, and they give it back to the Mayans... And of course we'll give the Dakota Indians back South Dakota, if they give it to the tribe THEY took it from, and they give it to the tribe THEY took it from...
    [/sarcasm]

servo75, your bullet points #1 and #4 bring to mind the deliberate hidden history of free blacks owning slaves of their own. Reference "Black Slave Owners - Free Black Slave Masters in South Carolina, 1790-1860" By Larry Koger

It's an interesting and eye opening read. I wonder how "reparations" for that get sorted out.

I completely agree. How far back do we have to find the original "owner" of the land to provide proper reparations. Same thing applies to Israel/Palestine dispute over the land. There is always somebody else before the last one. And, at some point the records become suspect.
So....everybody just get over it and try to make things better TODAY.

Those who believe in Keynsianism would see an opportunity here. With the big money to go to ex-slaves, descendants, dependents, agents, carpet-baggers, imitators, new sun-tanned migrants, on top of sorting out the statistics, the DNA tests and development of skin color tests (ADL and FDA approved), the payments to lawyers would exceed all the above - there would be a massive stimulus to the economy.
This beats digging holes and filling them up again.

I'm still waiting for someone to announce their operation of a working time machine. Otherwise, how are we going to correct a condition which hasn't existed (outside of Democratic policies) for >150 years?

In all seriousness: unless you were personally a slave, there are zero reparations due to you. Unless you were personally a slave owner, there are zero punishments due to you. This whole issue is so repulsive and devoid of any rational basis it makes my head spin.

Only if one ascribes to the ludicrous notion that a person owns and is responsible for the acts of one's parents/forbears. One of the great things inherent in the notion of America was a fresh start - that one would leave behind everything else and start anew. This would have our Founders rolling over in their graves...

How on earth would one decide how many generations to go back to establish this "liability". Maybe back to the 1500's? Go back far enough and you could completely bankrupt the people living today, except of course for the protected groups

That's one of the reasons it is so preposterous.

The real thing it does is establish a completely arbitrary way for those in power to punish anyone they want for things they haven't ever done or have part in. That's one of the reasons it is so dangerous.

Nonsense. It was a long time ago, and they are all dead by now anyway. What happened in the past is done and should be chalked up to past crimes. If you give money to blacks, how about taxing the germans to pay the jews reparations, or tax current russians for the people stalin killed in Russia and Ukraine, or tax china for all the people Mao killed during the great leap .backwards.

How about taxing current citizens for the indiscretions of our own government in creating the great depression. My grandmother suffered from that, so I should get reparations

The fact that they are all dead is the point Solver was making, term. The people that have owned slaves under his statement is zero by definition. Looters do treat us like their slaves though.

I think the argument might be that even though the actual slaveholders are dead, perhaps some part of their fortunes were left to people who are still alive, and should be clawed back.

In any event, there is no justification at all for a 150 year statute of limitations.

Irrelevant to solver's post. He only included those proven to have owned slaves, not people who may have had ancestors who owned slaves.
Fortunes? The only "fortunes" left after 1865 was in the hands of northern manufacturers for whom the war was fought and carpetbaggers who looted any white person still living and productive in the south after all their assets had been destroyed or stolen by Sherman's soldiers. So I guess they could try to get reparations from the banking cartel in NYC. They have deep pockets for the lawyers to pick. Clearly (to me) no one living should pay a dime to these lazy, looting scum for reparations or for anything else they haven't earned through actual production in the real world.

      Are you being sarcastic?

If not, you need some serious remedy to straighten your thinking.

How will they decide who should pay? Who will be eligible for reparations?

Will the "Committee" include slave traders in Africa who were instrumental in facilitating the practice?

Those who owned slaves are deceased now. So will their descendants be made to pay, even though they have nothing to do with it?

It is a newly concocted milking tool for the left and the looters.

I agree with Solver. Unless the people came from outside of the US no one has owned slaves in this country for more than 150 years. It is highly unlikely that any living or recently deceased resident of the us owned a slave of any type. Thus Solvers comment makes perfect sense.

All ordinary human taxpayers are more enslaved today and more due reparations from the feds (and their bankster puppeteers) than any person whose claim is that his ancestors were slaves. Let everyone keep what they earn from production. That is the thing that is moral and rational.

Those people should be paying damages to those they enslaved because they are actual victims in reality, not looters pretending they would have been better off if they had been born in Africa. A large number of these reparation-seeking looters would never have been born at all since they ancestors would have died as infants and there would not have been any descendants to be looters.

Remember the quickest resignation in the history of a public official for sexual abuse Eric Schneiderman May 2018.
              Weeks after NXVIM arrests occured.
              What was he accused of?
Update: Three hours after the publication of this story, Schneiderman resigned from his position. “While these allegations are unrelated to my professional conduct or the operations of the office, they will effectively prevent me from leading the office’s work at this critical time,” he said in a statement. “I therefore resign my office, effective at the close of business on May 8, 2018.”
Many credible abuse claims this one is on topic.
When Schneiderman was violent, he often made sexual demands. “He was obsessed with having a threesome, and said it was my job to find a woman,” she says. “He said he’d have nothing to look forward to if I didn’t, and would hit me until I agreed.” (She had no intention of having a threesome.) She recalls, “Sometimes, he’d tell me to call him Master, and he’d slap me until I did.” Selvaratnam, who was born in Sri Lanka, has dark skin, and she recalls that “he started calling me his ‘brown slave’ and demanding that I repeat that I was ‘his property.’ ”

No, I have not owned a slave.

But I was questioning the judgement that criminalized a lifestyle that was the norm at the time.

There were good and bad owners, like in all facets of life. I never condoned it but I am not criminalizing owners because they lived their lives as it was customary at the time.

This revisionist bend that is so widespread in our times is throwing out the baby with the bathwater.

There is a trend to judge people's lives, history, customs and everything else under the sun in the past, as dictated by CURRENT perceptions and PC norms.

Statues are being destroyed, schools' names changed, heroic historical acts and events put in a different perspective because it "offends" some people.

History can't be changed. A nation is what her history made her. It can't be eradicated because it strips the nation of her soul.

Sorry, I will never agree with that.

I never said anything about going back well over a hundred year in American history. What I wrote was suppose to demonstrate the hypocrisy of the whole farce.

            Maybe I should have written,
“All those individuals ALIVE TODAY who are proven to have owned slaves IN THE U.S. should be made to pay!”

I’m guessing that number is around zero.

Only twisted minds would make the dead pay by punishing the living.

I think (hope) that @Solver is being sarcastic, in that no one alive today could have owned slaves, and those are the only ones you COULD theoretically require reparations from.

My grandparents fled the Holocaust in the 1930s. Until their dying day they received reparation checks from the German government. What I'd point out is a very important difference that people leave out. Those were payments made directly to actual victims of the Holocaust, they weren't blanket payments to all German Jews, or all Jews in general.

Consider the fact that had there not been slavery, then none of those who would have had parents who were slaves would have been born and those those asking for reparations today, would never have existed.
In a way the reparations would be for having to live their lives rather than having never existed.
Likely most other living humans would not have ever existed.
The past must have happened for the present to exist.

So, they're going to get testimony from an author exploiting skin color and an actor doing the same. Both have benefited enormously from living in the U.S. and neither as far as I can tell have the slightest experience in being a slave.

The original slaves were forced unwillingly from Africa to the Americas. Maybe any payments to the descendants demanding reparations should include free willing or unwilling repatriation to Africa and then from there they can willingly decide what to do next. Think of the benefits for those repatriated descendants! They will no longer have to put up with "continuing discrimination" or "the social effects of slavery and segregation" because they will be living in virtually all black countries with all black leadership! There will be no cause to worry about such things as "economic issues are the root cause of many critical issues in the African-American community today" because they will be completely free to do whatever they wish for their own economic benefit in an entire continent of people just like themselves!

This is a bunch of crap! It's the New Jim Crow trying to place a tax or fee on millions of innocent people just for being born white and pay an unearned benefit for being born black. Restating the quote "economic issues are the root cause of many critical issues in the African-American community today" simply means the race baiters and poverty pimps haven't found a way to loot enough so this is a way to loot more. Hell, "economic issues" are the root cause of the critical issue that I don't have a huge yacht and a private jet, too!

I don't necessarily like the white supremacists but the First Amendment permits them to believe what they want. This is to put the blame on the current Caucasian population. Everyone who is a slave or has been one in their lifetime line up on the left and all slave owners line up on the right. Let those two groups work out what should be done. Don't forget to include the Africans who were in the business of kidnapping Africans and selling them to the slave traders. They owe reparations to those they harmed.
There is no one alive that owes reparations and no one who is reparations.

Well, if they want reparations then they'd have to start with the descendants from the country one is descendant from that sold or allowed your descendants to be slaves. Next go after the descendants of the Muslim Slave Hunters, then the descendants of the Shipping Companies that took your descendants to a country to serve as a slave.
Then, a descendant of all those descendants would first go after the Last country to abolish slavery and descending from that point to the first to abolish slavery.

OH, WAIT!...scratch the above because slavery still exist today! In Africa, the Middle East, In China and many Islands...in fact...Every Conscious Being and those that could become so...is still a slave of their own Governments!

    Now, What will you do?

This has been something on the slow burner for decades. Many colleges are not requiring students to pay a fee to support reparations to African American students-- Georgetown University comes to mind.

I don't know how I feel about this in light of knowing a great deal about my family tree. I know one ancestor tried to free his slaves long before the war but they refused to go, so my ancestor left his property to the slaves in his will. I know of another member of the family line, a woman with three small children who was left widowed and penniless at the end of the civil war. Her land was taken from her, then she walked the children through the mountains across two states in winter till she reached Maryland, Her and her children, almost dead from starvation, begged for mercy. Her oldest son, 10 years of age became an indentured slave to a Maryland farm owner. It's heart-wrenching: children becoming slaves to keep from starving. As I looked into my family history I would say I found quite a bit of reparation already.
None-the-less... I went to school with kids whose parents couldn't use the same drinking fountain as I did. The anger, the blowback...of course they want reparation. Symbolically, the idea has value. I certainly consider my dignity a matter of high value. I don't think any monetary amount the government can offer would replace what was lost, but let them give it a shot, what the hell. They certainly have wasted plenty of my money on 'ideas' that have no value at all.
