Ayn Rand was writing about the prospects for a revival of romantic art (including fiction) to replace the dismal state of contemporary art: "Will we see an esthetic Renaissance in our time? I do not know. What I do know is this: anyone who fights for the future, lives in it today."

She was producing romantic art in her own fiction, fighting for a better standard. "Lives in it today" means living one's values despite what else is around you. It's true of any values you pursue, not just fiction writing, but does not mean literally living in a future that doesn't yet exist or that the values you pursue will necessarily exist in the future. You're living now with values you want to see dominate in the future.
